Oh, how I lament the Squaresoft of old... I'm playing Mystic Quest on my Game Boy right now... So many memories...

Squaresoft had a lot of bad games. Mystic Quest (Snes) being one of them, Ergheiz (the console version was an extremely gimped in comparison to the Arcade), The Bouncer and Unlimited Saga are amongst some of the collection of bad Square games.

And S-E has good games too, just not in the same quantity and quality as Square and Enix had before the merge.

That's true, Squaresoft sure was not oblivious to bad games. Their games though catered more to the Japanese market and thus, me. SE nowadays tries too much to blend into Western development companies, thus all the action scenes, cut scenes, multiplayer, episodic content, supporting 360, etc.

Yup, I agree completely. Thankfully, for the handheld part, they have kept their original structure and have not deviated from their Japanese catered spirit. That's why I still appreciate them a lot, not only have they released amazing games for DS/PSP, they still have some pretty darn good ones in the future

Mystic Quest dosent count, it was made by Square of America, not of JP origin. Sqauresoft rocked: Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Parasite Eve and of course the Yatsumi Matsuno masterpiece that was Vagrant Story.i probabily missed a few...

A lot of people seem to blaming Wada, and i agree to an extent, but he wouldnt be forced to make these decisions if FF13 was more successful. and whether or not people think it was good or not, imo it was not what it couldve been. if Kitase and Toriyama didnt fuck up, (which they did), then Wada wouldnt be forced into making decisions to appeal to the western auidence.

There are a ton of masterpieces on the Squaresoft days, I never said otherwise. But they also had their own fair share of bad games, especially one that's absolutely loathed by most FF fans, FFX-2 (It's development started with Square before the merge, S-E only published it outside Japan)

I would list SaGa Frontier, Secret of Evermore, Bahamut Lagoon, Super Mario RPG and Final Fantasy Tactics as masterpieces too.

It was aimed at America, but it was developed in Japan.

Actually it was made by Squaresoft proper. It was designed to appeal to Americans though. The only game Square of America ever made was Secret of Evermore.

Is Mystic Quest SNES the same game as the GB one? That was phenomenal.

Nope. GB's Mystic Quest only had that name here in Europe. Everywhere else it was called Final Fantasy Adventure. And in Japan it as called Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden.

Which makes it the precursor of the Secret of Mana series

No. They're totally different games. Mystic Quest in Europe was the first Mana game. Mystic Quest in America was released in Europe as Mystic Quest Legend, and it was sort of a dumbed down JRPG to appeal to Western gamers.

I don't care what everybody else think. The Bouncer was awesome

It wasn't a horrible game, but for the amount of things that were shown previous to the release, the game massively under-delivered.

If they had at least maintained the Destructible environments, it would have made for a far better experience.
