Forums - Sales - Iwata comments on Wii successor and 3rd party support...

Saw this buried in the E3 IR report, and it seems to have gone generally unreported on.... Iwata's comments are a little cryptic, but sort of imply that they'll be taking a 3DS-like approach to Wii 2 (core focus, heavy 3rd party support).  I suspected as much after their E3 conference, but it's nice to see it semi-confirmed...

Iwata:
I do not think that there is an immediate need to replace the Wii console, but of course, at some point in the future, that need will arise. So I will answer your question from the perspective that we currently do not have an answer as to what point in the future that need will come.
This is something that I mentioned yesterday on stage as well, but when we first launched Nintendo DS and Wii, very few people in the industry thought that we would achieve the results that we have so far. Because of that, with those two platforms in particular, we had no choice but to try and create the market for those platforms by ourselves with the first party software.

However, if you recall our Nintendo 3DS announcement yesterday, we were able to announce the lineup that we did yesterday because the third party developers felt the possibility of a particular platform and came ready to support it from the launch time.

So when the time comes for us to release a new platform on the home console side, the question becomes how do we convince and demonstrate to those third parties that the next platform is going to be a success? And if we are able to do that, then the third parties will come to the table with their content, and to that, we’ll be able to add our own first-party content.
I think when that time comes and we are able to garner that type of support from the third parties, coupled with our own software contents, then naturally, we will be able to create a situation where many software become available and various types of people start to participate. We will also be able to create a good cycle for that new platform, which encourages consumers to buy software. When we’re able to do that, then I believe some of the challenges that you pointed out will start to move in a positive direction.

Pretty sure more third party support will come to Nintendo next home console.  Most third parties wanted to write off Nintendo this home console generation before Wii was even released.  They were wrong then and probably paid the price in ability to have a few more million seller games.  Nintendo seems to be trying to court third parties better recently than in the past.  Having the number 1 home console and handheld in sales doesn't hurt either.

I'm curious exactly what sort of support a renewed effort (and the "market leader" bargaining chip) will bring.  I'd expect Wii 2 to probably hold on to some "stolen" series (Monster Hunter 4, Dragon Quest XII, Samurai Warriors 4/5, etc) but after 3DS blew everyone out of the water I'd think expectations will be even higher, and I wonder what else can they nab?  Resident Evil 6?  Kingdom Hearts III?  Metal Gear Solid 5?  Final Fantasy XV?

Yes,the REAL support is what I though as the obvious consequence of the domination in these years.

I've always though that the successor of the Wii would have been treated in a very different way from third parties because

1)Most of the third parties, choosing the "wrong horse" at the beginning of the gen,and even now, despite the HD multiplatformism that is growing, has lost and still now lose a very considerable amount of money. How many times, this gen, have we heard about losses, cuts, and even closures of studios?

2)Wii has been so successful all around the world, and it sells an incredible amount of software, far far better than 360 and PS3...even if it has certainly the best support for a Nintendo home console since the SNES,but not the support of a LEADER,absolutely

3)Iwata has stated that there is a problem with third parties and that thier relations with them would have changed in the near future,in the Investors Relations of January

And I've though that also the successor of the DS would have had from the beginning a better TP support.

But what we have seen at E3 Conference is something that only a mad jackass fanboy would have believed as possible:MGS,KH,RE,Persona,SSFIV announced all togheter, with so many others...wow.

So,I think the Wii 2 will have a 3DS-esque support at the beginning(in its case, better from the West and worse from the East than the next handled, for the predominance of home gaming here)

Ack!  I just realized, I meant to put this in the Nintendo forum. :/

I wonder when they were scheming their 3DS blowout at E3 knocking at every door and asking for support, did they discuss any plans on Super Wii with 3rd parties? Next gen is creeping on us, next year or year after that I'd expect Super Wii announcement, so the better start early with preparations.

//And again, where the hell is Wii Relax? Was it delayed to support Wii software sales just in case they'll nosedive next year, or it's a Super Wii launch title now?

Nintendo's going for the throat, i would guess. They've already dug the foundation out from underneath their competitors, now they will push them out to the margins

MS and Sony have to be concerned at the possibility that their next home console gets '3DSed' by Wii2 like the PSP2 did.

One of the only ways to go against that would be to try to launch their consoles in a comparable or earlier timeframe.

I wonder how many consoles we'll see announced next year. I already expect Nintendo's next, but would Sony and Microsoft tip their hands so early after launching Move and Kinect?

Move and Kinect are far less serious investments on the part of either of them than they're making them appear. EyeToy looked like a serious investment in its day, too, but it never became a kingpin of the PS2 experience

These late-term peripherals are defensive actions primarilly, especially in Sony's case, while they cook up something that they can really steal marketshare with, but necessitates a new console for both.
