Forums - Sales - Wii outpacing PS2 software sales!

i am not talking about sales or whatever, is Monster hunter one of the few only games that supposed to be a decent third party offer? probably.

now for PS2 most of their best games are third party. and there is a loooooooooooooooooooooooot of them.

Realistically, 95% of PS2 games were trash but people were oblivious to their existence. The primary difference between the Wii and PS2 is that third party publishers pawn off the same kind of niche experiences that were failures on the PS2 (Okami, Killer7, God Hand) as AAA experiences; even though they lack the IP, Marketing, Production Values, or other characteristics that made successful AAA experiences on other platforms.

The saying "You only get one chance to make a first impression" is certainly true with game series, and countless virtually-unplayable ports in major series were released on the Wii in its first couple of years; and anyone who made the mistake of buying one of these games is not going to risk repeating it by buying the sequel regardless of how much publishers promise that they have fixed the problems.

Absolutely and I think this game http://www.ps2now.com/cheats/h/horsez/  is a perfect example. Of a rehashed PS2 game hoping to passed off as AAA. I guess anmo11 is right the quality of that Horsez game just can't be beat. Thanks PS2 and Ubisoft for such a great game. I think someone remember their console through rose coloured glasses and selective software.

Calm down guys. Let's have a look at these numbers. Currently we have total Wii software sales on 489,923,752... but:

Minus 205,323,102 gimmick Nintendo games = 284,600,650

Minus 93,214,496 games that came in bundles = 161,386,154

Minus 20,000,583 games mistakenly bought as Wii Fit = 148,982,154

Minus 22,404,000 games mistakenly bought as PS3 games = 118,981,571

Minus 44,430,292 games that were traded in stores = 74,551,279

Minus 12,293,464 games Nintendo distributed among their employees = 62,257,815

Minus 33,312,585 Wii Fits = 28,945,230

Minus the 13,323,393 games that RolStoppable and TheSource bought =  15,621,837

Minus 15,621,835 shipped and unsold The Conduit copies = 2

YOURS AND MINE SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2 COPIES.

you can and can't blame Nintendo on this.

its their fault that they made no effort for piracy and no effort to up their tech

and its third parties fault that they didn't do anything special for the wii.

I'm tired of hearing people say that third parties don't try much for the wii. Monster Hunter Trii is an awesome game and so is No more heroes and I'm sure many other games as well. The problem is, the wii owners buy mostly Mario and Party games. What would you do if you were a developer? Try to make a great game and get poor sales or make yet another "party" game with little effort and get great sales?

Monster Hunter Tri outsold the PS2 Monster Hunters (by a big amount as well), so you can't really use MH3 as an example.

And before anyone uses Muramasa as an example, Odin Sphere didn't sell that much more (and the PS2 had a much higher userbase)

Don't you think MH3 has been selling poorly in the west, despite being a great game? i noticed that many people in this forum were suprised by its lower than expected sales in the west. All I'm saying is that such sales are discouraging for 3rd parties to take any chances developing costly games for the wii. And I think that Monster hunter was not very popular when it came out on the ps2, but its fanbase grew with freedom unite. Also the ps2 has overall low sales due to piracy (I don't know a single person who owns any ps2 games)

It's an online focused, extremely difficult, very Japanese, grind 'em up.   How well do those usually sell in the west?  And in America and Europe, Tri more than doubled sales of the previous best selling installment (MHFU) upfront.  It's probably going to crawl to 2m shipped lifetime worldwide, which is probably the most it could've hoped for on any system really.

If you want to see high budget Capcom games that are badly underperforming in the west, look no further than recent PS3 & 360 releases (Bionic Commando, Dark Void, Lost Planet 2).

Wii piracy is actually easier to do than PS2 piracy too btw.  All you need is an SD card or USB drive and a copy of Zelda to install HBC, on PS2 you actually had to chip your console.

You do know that monster hunter is a terrible game to blame for wii games not selling

The game is basically a HD console game wannabe. The game doesn't take advantage at all
the wii's capabilities. The game goes aganist everything on what makes wii games sell and
goes against wii's image. Let me show you why

Local is limited Online isn't- Important most wii games are to played by everyone. Monster hunter
is to only be played by one person. See where that leads? Most people play wii with others unlike us on the forums who like playing by ourselves. Also note the best selling wii games have local muiltiplayer

The game doesn't use motion controls- Tell me what are the top selling wii games? Wii Sports,Fit Play and mario kart wii. Now tell me what do they have in common? That's right they all use motion controls right and enhance the game. Monster hunter comes with a classic controller. Tell me this. Why will people who bought the wii for motion controlled games buy monster hunter? Exactly

Monster hunter is a terrible example in this case sorry try again later

The Wii is at about 545 million software shipped as of March 2010. (don't think this includes Wii Sports)

Over here, we have PS2's March 2004 software shipments at 572 million units. That's 27mil away from where the Wii is at now, except the PS2 released 8 months earlier in Japan, and a few weeks earlier in EU / America.

They seem more or less equal, with the Wii probably much farther ahead in the US, but behind in the other regions.
