Forums - Nintendo - Is Nintendo taking Quantum Leaps? Now talking about online

We know the wii store and pretty much Nintendo's online structure is lackluster and underwhelming, but Iwata seems quite excited for their online model for the 3DS

Well, first, one of the things that I love about Nintendo is we constantly are reviewing our performance. I completely agree with you that the online… or let me state it more broadly, the digital area is an area where we can improve, and we’ve made a commitment to dramatically improve in that area. Now, what that looks like I can just about guarantee is unlike anything that our competitors have done to date. The reason for that is it wouldn’t be innovative, it wouldn’t be distinctive, and therefore, it wouldn’t be Nintendo. Our approach will be to enable the consumer to discover our digital content much more easily. Our focus will be to have a range of digital content that is compelling for the consumer. Our approach will be a digital business model where every participant is financially moving in a positive direction, and our approach will be to make the consumer say “wow” in the end. That’s what we’re trying to do.
I can’t go into detail on what the plans are today, but of course, with a device like Nintendo 3DS, we do intend to offer some type of digital distribution. What I can say is that if that type of digital distribution is not something that is very new and fresh compared to what we have done with Nintendo DSi, then I think we’re going to have a hard time reaching out beyond the audience that actively seeks out that type of digital content.

So up until now, much of the digital distribution focus has been on more of a "pull type" where the consumer goes out, gets the content and pulls it to themselves. With Nintendo 3DS, we’re looking at a model that would be more focused around the "push type," where we’re able to push information or content out to the device. And with a model like that, what it means is that because the consumer doesn’t have to actively seek out the information themselves, it gives us a venue for creative new ideas of our company or of our developers to reach consumers much more easily.

sounds cool, can't wait to see how things will work!

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

hopefully they keep improving because just like reggie said it is one area where they can definitely improve upon....Also, great picture - Quantum Leap is one of the best tv shows ever

I started making videos for youtube; check them out.

You should congratulate me. I destroyed the vile red falcon and saved the universe. I consider myself a hero.

I can tell you how it works right now. If you have a PC and an antivirus then you know how it works. Anti Virus run in the background and query updates. The competition ie MS and Sony "online area" requires users manually download updates. As do most PC games.

So Nintendo is i'm assuming going to allow games to anchor automatic updates into the OS when running in the background online. So while your playing SF4 3DS you will find updates coming down for say Nintendogs Cats... or something like that.

Been there done that. However this behind the scenes online for anchored updates is extremely important in regards to getting the masses online. Most console owners do not go online. This invisible style works because it's more like antivirus. It's passive and mostly invisible to the user. Thus it's more convenient and will be more of a success.

So there you go... no more wondering how it will work.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

this would be an awesome idea

I hope it would have an option to alert you when it's about to do something, as well as when someone is in range with a 3DS. So far they've just said that the systems would silently interact with each other, but I think it would be cool to meet some random person playing the same game as me.

"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.' " ~John 14:6 (NKJV)

I hope they do, what they say.

I hope they really start making quantum leaps with it.  I really think that Apple is something really pushing them to do this to make a more competitive and user friendly online setup.  Possibly a little push from Xbox Live as well, as Ninty sees how profitable and used it is.  So I do hope they move forward with this because the online so far has not been that great.  And I hope it wouldn't be too much to ask to have something like achievements haha.  Lots of Wii games have something like it in it (although not universal but tied to the game) including Brawl so hopefully they'll do that.

This article is just nothing, but PR speak.

The 'push type' sounds scare to me. Does that mean I have to opt-out of buying software? If so, I hate that idea. If its just pushing little demos and such, then no biggie.

One more thing, why has noone asked the most important question?

ARE THERE FRIEND-CODES?
