So not to ruin the thread by quoting a massive long post i thought i would put a new one to respond to this time thing.
Right there is one critical flaw thing about this whole GT3 selling loads with a far smaller install base etc..Some seemed to have ignored it while on their little crusades.
When GT3 came out the PS2 wasen't even released outside Japan.....GT3 was a launch title for most territories. Your comparing sales for one region, obviously the attach ratio will look better by doing that!
If you want a better indicator of this time thing then look at the first year on sales after it's release. In that Year PS2's total install base was 28m units....Only 7m short of what PS3 has sold in 4 years on sale.
So the point that some are making is GT5 can sell like GT3 if the pattern on the PS2 repeats itself. In that the console is sold at the same rate as the PS2 was.
Again not going to happen.

Ok, i've been out of this thread because I don't discuss sales, but the bold part is ridiculous.
I distinctly remember the PS2 launching in november 2000 here in Europe, and GT3 only releasing almost a year later in July 2001.
GT3 was far from being a launch title.

Ok seems i need to give a little explanation of what i meant.
In terms of dates you are of course 100% right. PS2 was launched in october 2000.
However there were serious problems with the launch, there were PS2's made that then had to be recalled, stock levels were mega low, you could not get one for a long long time unless you wanted to pay a stupid amount of money.
So as i said to get a better idea of time you can't use when GT3 came out because there were massive problems with stock.
To give you an example of that if we take the US launch of PS3 on 26th october 2000 and go to the date july 10th 2001 when GT3 was released only 3m PS2's had be sold in states. That is over a course of 8 months. Over the following 8 months from 10th july 2001 to march 10th 2002 PS2 in america sold nearly 8m units. Nearly trippling it's sales. That was down to stock finally coming out.
So while GT3 was not a direct launch title it was actually just out when the stock problem started to be sorted.
And that was the point i was trying to make.
I got my hands on my PS2 after GT3 was released, simply because there were no PS2's to buy.
