Forums - Microsoft - Kotaku asks developers, "Will Kinect really not work while you're sitting?"

My question still stands... how are you going to accelerate/brake in a game that's "optimized for standing" as the developers say?

The Burnout demo used the feet.  Forward accellerates, backward brakes.  One could also use your hand distance from your body to determine accelleration.  Push foward to accellerate, pull back to brake.  This is how JoyRide handles boost.  Pull back and then push forward.

I personally don't think driving games will be very fun with Kinect regardless.

Games standing up is forgivable, I can imagine it would be difficult to read a persons foot movements sitting on a couch. Though sitting down would be much better for driving games say.

Movies standing up is simply stupid, they have to fix it before launch.

This has since been debunked, time for an update to that OP.

You tell me I should change my OP, yet you give me no information as to why I should do so or to what I should change it to.  How kind.  :P

I have read the comments that debunk the idea that Kinect only functions properly while you stand, and every response has thus far has minced words.  Greenberg mentioned "depending on the game or experience."  IGN specifically said that "they don't want you to stand while watching a movie," which has no bearing on gaming functionality.  Etc. etc.  There has yet to be a simple, "Kinect works fine while you're sitting!" response, no matter how many times the question's been asked.

More importantly, none of these comments change what developers have told Kotaku concerning Kinect.  Microsoft HAS advised developers to not make games that would involve the players sitting down.  The Forza demo HAS been "optimized for standing."  The developers working on the dashboard interface DID say that "sitting is something [they]'re still calibrating for."

As it stands now, if you're going to be using Kinect, chances are you're gonna be standing.

On an unrelated note, I will say that the thread over on neogaf about this topic has been quite fun to read.

Ok...that was uncalled for. Since your so up to date with your gaming news, i thought you would've already figured it out.

I don't see why Microsoft would encourage players to sit down to showcase their games at E3 when the point is to get them to be active, and engage themselves with Kinect. Forza...same thing, in real life i walk around a car to look at it, i don't sit down and magically float around the sides to check out the fenders, and tires. To go as far as saying Kinect will ONLY support games that you stand while playing is ridiculous, especially since that's not confirmed, it's more of a rumor as it stands (see what i did there). In any case some games will require you to stand because "depending on the game or experience" it's warranted. I wouldn't play Wii Fit sitting down, so why would i for Fitness Evolved?

The thing that upsets me about this is that it will be completely ignored by the mainstream media.

Well, if its not fixed, and it really does sell 3 million before Christmas MS are going to have ANOTHER major PR disaster clearly.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Sitting is not good for your posture unless you have the right seat and posture, which I am extremely doubtful of. When I took Alexander Technique  at my conservatory they taught us about seatings in Orchestra and how important it is to adjust your seat correctly. I also learned from that class most people can't even get into a seat properly, and most people do not sit correctly.

LYING FLAT ON THE FLOOR is the best thing you can do for your posture...Some musicians play immensely better sitting (Itzak Perlman) than standing but a majority I'm quite sure are better at playing while standing (you feel your legs and the ground more). Just saying Kinect standing does nothing bad for your posture unless your posture itself was already messed up.

As for sitting I would prefer Forza while sitting immensely and I hope MSFT addresses this issue for games that could be played on Kinect while seated.

You drive standing?

Yet you sit down to drive it. Some games will work well with standing, dance and fitness games are the best examples. Nobody is claiming every game should be played sitting down.

The problem is MS has given no real reason to believe that things like Forza will be playable sitting down, none of their E3 demos allowed it and all of their answers to the question have been in weaselese
