I'm being pretty picky when I say that.  It doesn't look as tight to me as most really memorable JRPG combat systems.  It's obviously much more like an MMO, and like most recent JRPGs, you control one character.  Running around with one character often feels like playing an action game where your button presses interact with menus instead of directly controlling your avatar.  What I love about lots of older JRPGs is that they feel like steamlined strategy games where your menu selections feel surprisingly action-y (visceral might be a better word) -- almost the reverse of the combat gameplay in this newer stuff.  That said, I've only seen a few early battles in Xenoblade, so maybe higher levels make it feel even more like an action game., which I think is the best direction to go in for a combat system like this.

Anyway, hope that makes sense.

I get you, yeah you mostly control one character, though you do have team attacks where you pick out which attack you'll make your team members perform.  And unlike the typical MMO formula for some JRPGs instead of having an attack button and having to wait till you can do any action again, you attack constantly but then you have various stronger attacks to pick from those are timed so you can't spam them, you have a powerful combo that charges up when you hit the enemy once that fills up you can hit them with a strong combo, then you have various arts, healing spells, etc.

There is a lot more strategy going in especially when you start getting more characters and each character is pretty unique, you have some that are better tanks, some are really good at healing, etc, etc and you can use any of them as your main character and swap out any time outside of battle.

It's pretty nifty and does differentiate itself from other action RPGs
