Forums - Nintendo - Is 3DS a sign of a new Nintendo strategy for major 3rd party core games?

One thing that really stood out to me while watching the 3DS unveiling was the mention of so many major 3rd party core franchises coming to it.  It seems like Nintendo is finally getting seriously about going after such games and addressing the only real weakness the Wii and to a lesser extent the DS have.

So what do you guys think?  Is this a sign of a new strategy for Nintendo which will carry on with the Wii's successor as well (perhaps resulting in another Nintendo golden age for such such support last seen with the SNES)?

Also what do you think this means for the DS's main competitor?  The PSP's only advantages over the DS was its more powerful hardware and a few major core franchises having a stronger presence on it.  With the 3DS being rumored to be more powerful than a PSP and Nintendo's possible new core game strategy do you think Sony made a big mistake by not announcing the PSP's successor?

Around the Network

I do not think its a sign that Nintendo is going after them, but they have woke up to Nintendo after what they mostly missed out on with DS and Wii at the start. SHowing support early on will draw fans of those series to it and sales should show it. Once you bring a fanbase of a type of game or series to it, it is much harder to expect thoose kinds of sales on a different system.

No. It's not. You misinterpreted Nintendo strategy.

Nintendo, much like Sega and Atari, knows that 1st party software moves systems and 3rd parties just jump on board. This has been how videogames have worked though most of it's history. This is why Nintendo also though that 3rd parties would flock to the Wii, because there was never a point were these wasn't true (save for the NES's early days). With this in mind, Nintendo doesn't need to redefine their strategy around third parties. Nintendo pushed the software, and, so far, Nintendo has proven that 1st party software is what counts. You are trying to apply Sony and Microsoft's strategies (which don't work to well) to Nintendo. Nintendo relies on 1st party software.

Also, the 3DS has a much bigger goal, one no one will expect. The industry has played well into Nintendo's hand. They have misidentified Nintendo has a "company about growing the market for grandma." This allows Nintendo to attacking and no one will see it coming. If you don't beleive me, watch the unveiling of the 3DS. Notice what Reggie talks about a lot, A problem with 3D. Then, listen to the begining of Sony's conference.
