You have been missing out. I never owned a handheld until the DS, but man have I had a lot of fun with that thing.

But lucky you! You'll get access to all those great DS titles when you buy a 3DS. You'll still miss out on a few awesome GBA games, but you can't have it all.

Portable Virtual Console, up to the GBA.  Believe it!

@OP Well spoken - I have to say it myself: I have never considered buying a handheld, until now.

Then you get to wait for the games to trickle in, and that One Great Game never seems to come. So I feel good having a DS Lite and the cartridges, all the same.

And as the games come out on VC, I can trade in the cartridges to collectwhores who really care about having the hardware.

Ocarina of Time 3D confirmed, boy.

I buy the 3DS first day. Eyes closed on the price (though I know Nintendo will not sell it expensive)

I thought I read that the 3DS was compatible with the DSi but not the DS.

You are mistaken: it's game slot accomodates DS cards as well, and it's touted as being fully compatible with DS software.

That explains it: you're reading slowtaku!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressionsArt.cfm?artid=23289

"On the back of the system is a game card slot in the familiar location, but with some differences. The mouth of the slot is wider and deeper than before, implying a new physical medium to thwart piracy. However, a look into the slot reveals a shelf that narrows the slot to the size of the original DS game cards."

Also, the original press release which announced the 3DS stated that it's backwards compatible with the DS.

Square-enix did well in holding off the Final Fantasy V and VI remakes. Now they can take advantage of this gem of hardware. 3DS > Wii right now.
