It is possible. Myamoto hinted that they already did, but that you can turn it off and make small slashes count as full power so you don't get tired as fast. I saw it in the IGN round table I think (can't find source).

I'd definitely enjoy that. Even if it was something superficial like how much force you use being tied to a certain amount of health lost of the enemy it would be pretty nice.

Edit: Btw the art style definitely reminds me of some kind of 3d The Minish Cap

With all game mechanics implemented it looks like Wii Sports Resort where I can explore Wuhu Island on foot. I liked WSR, probably I'll like Zelda: Skyward Sword as well. I guess, I'm not the only one who get the same feeling?

If you look at the beginning, you can see an option to skip cut scenes. So those who were worried are rest assured.
