Forums - Nintendo - Wii Fit selling out in Japan

I wasn't complaining about Wii Fit outselling Galaxy, I was pointing out how Nintendo fans can say one thing and then another.

Sure they can. You know why? Because it's not contradictory.

I enjoy playing huge "hardcore" games like Zelda and Mario Galaxy, and I enjoy playing Big Brain Academy with my family. What's wrong with that?

Some people here are so one-dimensional in their thinking, I can't believe it (not talking about you here, MH). Earlier someone complained that "Wii Fit is a game built around a peripheral." So... that's bad? Revolutionizing the interface is bad? Only games that DON'T change the way we play are real games? Yeah, right.

I'm definitely sad that SMG doesn't sell well in Japan, as it's one of the best games I've ever played. On the other hand, Japanese gamers always loved games I'd never touch with a ten feet pole. Final Fantasy I-XXIV or Dragon Quest I-MMCXXIII, for example. So I'm not really surprised that they disagree with my taste again.

Bottom line: I'm happy that SMG is a success (overall), and I'll be happy if Wii Fit will be a success.

Currently playing: NSMB (Wii)

Waiting for: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii), The Last Story (Wii), Golden Sun (DS), Portal 2 (Wii? or OSX), Metroid: Other M (Wii),
... and of course Zelda (Wii)

i am just scared. I have been sitting on a couch all my life, training to be the best gamer in town and now my little niece will be able to beat me real hard in one of the major releases next year. My sense of balance is way off. NOT FAIR!!!!

I want SMG to sell really well. I want Wiifit to sell really well. I dont think there isnt a nintendo fanboy who doesnt want them to both do well and they will both do well.

Does the fact that Brain Training does so well in any way dimish your enjoyment of zleda ds?

I don't like Zelda.

Point is still there, do you feel threatened when a casual game does better than a hardcore game?

Until dynasty warriors, everybody's golf was the best selling PS3 game in Japan, outselling R&C, Lair, etc. Does that automatically make the PS3 a casual games only system?

Nintendogs is on path to be one of the best selling games ever on the DS, does that completely invalidate the hardcore games on the DS like mario kart?

And OMG guitar hero 3 outsold all these super big budget hardcore gray tones only fps games on the PS3 and xbox, and its also a hardware packin!!! If the same complaint is leveled about wiifit outselling SMG, then you'll have to complain about GH3 outselling mass effect and bioshock and uncharted. Any takers? No?

I wasn't complaining about Wii Fit outselling Galaxy, I was pointing out how Nintendo fans can say one thing and then another.

And what he's pointing out is the hypocricy of those gamers (Dodece) who attack the Wii because of the success of those casual games.  The point is Wii owners want all good games to be successful on the system.

It's absolutely ridiculous to expect Wii owners to be sad about a casual game doing well on the system, just because they were sad about a good core game not performing to expectations.  Core games have already proven they are successful on the Wii, and many of them are selling very very well.  Why on earth do you  think it's hypocritical for Wii owners to want games of multiple styles to be successful?  I'm glad Wii owners are open minded enough to not act like some of the immature members of this forum, and that they accept and support multiple gaming styles.

MontanaHatchet said:

No, it's the hypocritical attitude,

Galaxy sells 260k first week:

"How can Mario Galaxy not sell in Japan?!!" "How can they not buy the games I want them to buy?" "Stupid casuals!"

Wii Fit sells out:

"It's teh revolutionz!!!"

Wii crazies need to make up their mind whether they want good games to sell or not.

You can't want both?  I bet Wii Fit will be a good game.  Everthing i've see indicates it'll be a lot of fun AND have a workout function.  What more can you ask for?

As for the hypocracy of it... well yeah.  Everyones a hypocrit... a lot of these people on the boards on all sides like to do it.  I mean look at all the Sony people who bashed Gundam Musou and Dynasty Warriors games saying their gameplay was crap, they were the first to cheer when DW6 became the highest selling sony game in japan.

And look at the microsoft fans, all two of em, i'm sure docede has said something hypocritical too... i'm not sure though, his posts are just like giant paragraphs of fanboyism dressed up in trying to sound like it's perfectly logical so i usually only get halfway through.

I agree, but if you ignore the casual and look at the hardcore, there are some titles to be sad about.  Especially by the mediocre to poor showing of good 3rd party hardcore games.  Even at $29 the Godfather sits on a shelf.  Most will say, "It is a port" or "People already had it on the PS2", but the simple truth is the game with the most involved and, in my opinion, the best control scheme failed.  I haven't played Zack & Wiki or Medal of Honor 2 Heroes as I have asked for them for Xmas, but what I hear is that they are great games and aren't quite flying off the shelves.

MontanaHatchet's point is that the Wii camp on this site makes almost as many excuses as the PS3 camp when it comes to the poor showing of games.  I think he is correct about that.  I can only hope that 3rd party developers still create some great games for the Wii even though some of their best first attempts didn't do so well.

I don't think any excuse need to be made, the fact is Japan is a different market in terms of gaming than the west, and truthfully is where the west will be in a few years, they've already made the transition to being a nongamer dominated market

I'm so glad I could give this thread more activity.

I don't know why PS3 and Wii fanboys fight so much. They have so much in common it's not even funny.

All fanboys have so much in common

You do from time to time bother reading oh I do not know the sales charts for the Wii. Notice anything striking about the top five games. No wait I don't want to ruin the surprise for you. Seriously this isn't the blue ocean its the wading pool. What your telling me that mini games are not the best selling genre on the console. What are your going to say they do not hold the top positions.

1. Wii Sports 12.45m
2. Wii Play 6.99m
3. Zelda Twilight Princess 3.88m
4. Mario Party 8 2.78m
5. Wario Ware Smooth Moves 2.00m

Seriously the console already has somewhat of a reputation. The fact that its living up to that reputation isn't going to help when it comes to getting complex, or more mature titles. Honestly I can only play so many compilations before I want a real game. I suppose if you get off on the though of an endless stream of compilations it sounds fantastic to you, but for me I want something challenging not mind numbing.

Basically its true and you know it. Crying about it doesn't change a thing.

I like how you only count Wii Sports when it helps you prove your point.  I also like how you showed the top 5 instead of the top 10, which shows very diverse software sales

Let's see, that's:  5 party games, 1 FPS, 1 survival horror, 1 Platformer/RPG, 1 Platformer, 1 Action-Adventure, and 1 sports game.  Damn, if only Wii owners bought more than party games.

No, no, no.  1 pack-in demo that's arguably more sports than party, 1 party game that comes with a Wiimote, 3 party games, and then the rest of that list.  The two top selling "party games" are having a lot of success thanks to their super low price points.  I really don't see what's bad with having party games in your top 10.  Party games are fun.  They have PARTY in their name.  Plus, they should still be fun and several (like RRB and WW) have better style and humor than a lot of nonparty games.  They appeal to both hardcore and casual so it makes sense that they should sell well.  However, simply because they're high up doesn't mean that's all there will eventually be.  People need variety.  Even if one of the three major fastfood burger places (McD's, Wendy's, and BK) were to take a commanding lead, neither of the other two would disappear because people don't want the same thing every time they need a fast burger.  The same applies to games.
