Online puzzle games have been selling like hotcakes for years now. Almost every parent has played HOURS of Solitaire or Minesweeper. The casual gamers have always been there.
And casual gamers spend lots of money on games. They always have and always will. Now they can have a console to satisify that need.
That's why I have always said that Microsoft should advertise the hell out of Live Arcade. That service would make some of these casual gamers EXTREMELY happy. |
When I borrowed a friends 360 and played it for the weekend the most fun I had was with the Arcade games. The biggest problem I had though was that for such simple games you're stuck using such a complicated controller. Sure for me it was fine but I don't know if most people would feel that way. Also the other problem I've noticed is that Arcade games come very few and far between. The system's been out for 2 years and there is only just over 100 games released on it. To be a really compelling system to casual gamers, the entry price needs to be cheaper, the games need to be advertised better and they just need more games or the promise of a lot of games coming.
I'm really surprised with the fact that no one is taking Nintendo on in the education area. If the 360 had some educational fun games like Big Brain Academy on the Arcade and it was advertised as much, I could see it taking off.
Now I realize Nintendo doesn't even have it's own service available yet (WiiWare) but it already has a ton of VC content which is pretty hard to compete with quality wise. We don't know enough yet about what to expect from the Wiiware titles so as it stands Nintendo leads with amount of downloadable games to purchase but loses on originality. Not that I think many people could care less about. A good game is still a good game.
Anyway I agree with you completely, Microsoft is missing a huge opertunity to strike Nintendo where it's currently weak. Why it hasn't done this is beyond me...
