In order for a game to be an RPG, it must involve role-playing, something that most JRPGs tend to not have. As far as I'm concerned, Final Fantasy is just as much an RPG as The Secret of Monkey Island. The real distinction should be between western and eastern adventure games, as that is what they really are.

In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games.

Sig Worthy....Would you mind if I put this in my sig?

Sure.

You can put a J in front of it, but it's not an RPG.

You can keep telling yourself that. Because it is no matter what you or the others say.

Actually, at one point in time, FF had as much role-playing elements as WRPGs did. Final Fantasy II was probably one of the rare cases of JRPGs that used a system of learn by doing. You could define your role by the actions that you partake during the game, pretty much like the Elder Scrolls series does.

And you do play as a role in JRPGs. The main difference is that the roles are usually more defined and rigid than in WRPGs. Unfortunately, most of the recent WRPGs have also use a very rigid structure to how each character's role progresses.

To be completely fair, neither WRPGs nor JRPGs should be called true RPGs, as your choices are pretty much irrelevant. True RPGs (board ones) give you total freedom to affect the development of not only your character, but how that role ends up affecting and shaping the entire flow and history of the game. In video games, that structure is extremely limited, because you can only allow so much freedom before you have to fix a story/stories that have to be followed, no matter your choices.

When ppl say is FF dead...what context are you talking in?  FF is loosing its essence but its very far from dead in my opinion

It was a dying franchise since quite a while, but now it also has sold its soul to the devil (Microsoft). It can't be saved anymore.

Apparently the sequel in the series selling more than its predecessor means it is dieing. LOGIC FOLKS, AT ITS FINEST!

I already see the problem. It looks like twesterm is ready to upgrade to action RPGs. Turn based isn't good forever.

....must get Star Ocean 3...

What I'm saying is why don't we just call them Japanese Adventure Games (because JAGs is a stupid abbreviation i guess :P). By this defintion, there are many RPGs. Modern Warfare is an RPG, Bioshock is an RPG, Dead Space is an RPG, Resident Evil 4/5 are RPGs, Demi-God is an RPG even Counter-Strike could be seen as a limited RPG.

For example, even though S.T.AL.K.E.R. has no points or leveling up, it's still involves much more role-playing than any FF game. When my friends and I play DnD, we forget stats and just play it as we see fit, but it's still and RPG.

I guess what I'm saying is that JRPGs have been misbranded since their inception, and there's little we can do about it now.

If JRPGs die out, then i'll probably be not playing games anymore. Maybe once in a blue moon. But if you take out the best genre, then what's the point?

Do you find it the best because of the gameplay, or because of the plots?

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

Both.

That's why i love the Tales battle system so much, you actually fight when it's time to battle

You should try Paper Mario if you like RPGs but don't just want to watch stuff happen on screen, i mean the game doesn't have any flashy cutscenes (barely any cutscenes at all), it's all in the really fun battle system, there's certainly no "auto battle" in PM's battles

I love RPGs (it's tied as my fav genre with platformers) and I don't like to just watch stuff happen on screen either, that's why Tales and Paper Mario are two of my favourite game series ever :)

Tales = Cutscene heavy as well.

Seriously...

I meant that it wasn't plain turn based or similar (where you select an action then the on-screen character does a few moves), but more action oriented where the player actually performs actions in battle, same with Paper Mario
