Forums - Gaming - JRPG's are dead

twesterm said:

So I'm playing FFXIII and watching the opening cut scene.  We have all this fantastic crap going on and I'm sitting there thinking damn that's cool, can't wait to do that!

And then I get control and I get two basic attacks and whatever the hell blitz (which looks just like a basic attack).  In the meantime the guy I'm not controlling is doing cool stuff, meanwhile, I'm not.

So while I was bored tapping the X button picking auto-battle because there really wasn't much else to do I started thinking-- what would I be doing in a good game?

I started thinking about Uncharted 2.  In Uncharted 2, all that fantastic stuff going on in that cut scene at the start of FFXIII, I would be doing that shit instead of sitting there with my hands behind my head watching it happen and then doing boring stuff when I do get control.

Now, so why do I say JRPG's are dead?  They love to rely on those crazy cut scenes doing fantastic stuff because that was just stuff you can't do in games.  Now, we can do that.  That means we're sitting there watching Lightning be some sort of action hero asking ourselves why we aren't the ones doing that.

Instead, I get to do auto-battle and then I'm greeted with 30 pages of a datalog?  This is the best JRPG's have to offer me?  JRPG's can't even tell me a story anymore, they have to have me read it in a datalog?

Let me go back to the pen and paper roots of RPGs.  In that game, you tell the DM (or GM/Game Moderator) what you want to do, and then the GM rolls the dice and that is the result.  You are told what happened.  Now, translate that to the cut scenes and you have what JRPGs are about.  Now, if you want action for this, then you can go action-RPG.  You get stuff like in Zelda, EXCEPT you build up your stats.

NO, JRPGs aren't dead.  It is just that you aren't interested in them any longer.  And that is how life works.  I used to like baseball games, but I outgrew them.  I do think Baseball Stars (NES) is still one of the best video baseball games I played.

I will also say the action genre consumes other genres and makes them their own.  The action genre took over adventure games, so now that action games are less arcade style and more action-adventure with either a greater focus on action, or on adventure.  And now, the action genre looks like it is moving in on the RPG genre.  Mass Effect series is a step in that direction.   And think for a second about multiple player Modern Warfare.  The hook in that is a major hook involved in RPGs, which is stat building.  I would also argue Red Dead Redemption had something similar.   In Red Dead, you gain experience points, which unlock more stuff.  And then I could bring up Borderlands, which does similar.  People who make action games realize that the elements of adventure AND RPGs help make the action genre better, so they add them.

Dude. Persona 4 was a lot of degrees easier than Persona 3. And yeah, physical attacks can win most of the random battles. I never said all of them did I?

That's like saying that all battles can we won on FFXIII using Auto-Battle alone. I would like to see someone beating an Adamantoise with Auto Battle

Well, it cancels out a bit, since Persona 4 had direct ally control, haha.

I still curse Persona 3 for being a little overwhelming even on Normal mode. I mean, shit, that boss did 185 damage when I'm only Level 19!

Again, I am not defaming Auto-Battle, just the fact that FF13 had virtually no control over allies.

Just wait then until you reach Tartarus Sixth Block

Yup, I know. I just don't think it's valid to use Auto-Battle as an excuse to downplay FFXIII. Those who disliked Auto-Battle, but were still to lazy to actually try to play the game for themselves have only them to blame, not the game.

I've been resisting the urge to look ate GameFAQs, but fusing is just so complex.

I just want a Persona with Wind Resistance or Nul Wind. Yet I can't find one. Gah.

At your level, I can only recommend Fortuna. It's a Fortune Arcana persona, with natural wind resistances and Dodge Wind.

Twesterm you have taken casual drive-by.... topics... of this kind to a new level. Bravo.

When was the last time you played a JRPG that wasn't called Final Fantasy?

Go pick up Lost Odyssey. You'll liek it if only for the leveling system, where you're brought up to an enemy-appropriate level quickly and then basically stay there, making grinding unnecessary, unsatisfying, and difficult. Also you can listen to it in five different languages.

I actually have Lost Odyssey and I tried it twice.  All I really remember about it is that I stopped playing it...

Try again. You don't get any advice better than that, sorry; you haven't given any proper side in a conversation that would suggest you need more than that.

You put down a lot of games, and if you can't remember something being wrong with it then there's no reason to assume there was.

So try again.

Sorry, typed that post in a hurry (busy past few days and computer busy doing other things, reason why I've been absent from the topic).  Meant say I tried it twice and there was something that pissed me off about it, I just don't remember what.

I still have it so I'll get to it eventually, I just can't remember why it made me angry last time I played it.  And yes, I do put down a lot of games.  :-p

IX > VII > VI >>>>>> X > IV > VIII > V > XIII

Didn't bother with the others and I don't have a reason to.

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

The battle system is a lot deeper than what you are shown in the first battles. Also, the datalog is just like the codex from Mass Effect (and is less daunting than the one in Dragon Age), in that it gives you plenty of backstory and info about the game...nobody's making you read it, and if you did read it, you could knock it out in less than 10 minutes.

In short, I've played better JRPGs this gen than FFXIII, but you don't seem to be willing to give it a chance. The game has flaws, but they aren't what you mentioned at all. JRPGs are not dead, you've just stopped liking them.
