Forums - Sony - Why people are overestimating the Wii's life time sales

The Wii will probably sell very well, but it won't match PS2 sales. Every week the PS2 sets a new high in units sold. The PS2 needs to stop selling for the Wii to catch up. Based on Black Friday sales, the PS2 sales are somewhat strong.

This thread didn't bring up any compelling reasons why the Wii would end up with less than 70 % market share.

Price drops didn't help struggling consoles in the past (Xbox, GC) and the resource shift of publishers will only improve Wii sales. Higher Wii sales will increase 3rd party support which will lead to even more Wii sales.

The 360 looks like it will easily outsell the Xbox, and the PS3 will easily end up outselling the Gamecube, so even if the Wii managed to beat the PS2, it couldn't hold the same dominant marketshare.

Thats only assuming that the market stays relatively the same size.  There are general reports that indicate the market demographic and split has changed.  So that's not necessarily true.

 What's not true?

Long story short, PS3+xbox 360> Wii :every week ,on a weekly basis.
Although the Wii will sell the most as an indivisual console, they will not have marketshare dominance or even a majority, just the most sold.

The PS1 had no reliability issues and no extra features and it sold 100 million.

oh yes it did, playstation 1 from the early years had plastic parts for the cd rom motors, and where notoriously prone to failure, Unfortuneately it'd be hard to pull up an 8 year old issue of gamepro but it said the life of the original models of the ps1 had around a sub 5000 hour life at best and fmv heavy games ate the life faster.

i see the point, op, but you need to look at the future. i see traditional games dying out (i'm getting bored) and casuals taking over. this is where nintendo takes the edge and will prove monopoly sales.

What's the numbers for the year-to-date?

You're basically asking why the site is in love with Nintendo...

The site loves nintendo because they have never played a ps3.

Well if the Wii sells 100 million units it's because of the new Wii Sleep.

The Wii Sleep is a pillow that can record your dreams when you lay down overnight and then you can watch your dreams on TV in the morning because you usually forget them when you wake up.

Some dreams are best left unknown

What werid dreams do you have?

I'll take the case!!!

The PS2 will stop selling eventually, and the Wii may (and will likely) continue to sell beyond that point. It is perfectly possible for the Wii to surpass PS2's sales.
