The crash didn't happen because there were a lot of bad games, but rather because many games didn't work properly. They randomly froze up, were full of bugs and glitches or didn't work at all (imagine wasting $50 on something you never get to play). It certainly didn't help that Atari themselves released E.T. during that time period, a game that is so lousy that it is sometimes blamed to be a main cause for the crash. There was no reason for consumers to trust any maker of video games anymore.

But something like that isn't going to happen again for several reasons:

1) There are plenty of companies that aren't just seeking to make a quick buck, so there will be enough quality games.
2) Minimum quality standards have to be met nowadays, otherwise games are not allowed to be released by the console manufacturers.
3) Information regarding video games is much more widespread nowadays especially due to the internet, helping people to make the right purchases.
4) Consumers themselves are more knowledgeable than in the past, because today there are many people who grew up with video games and played them for decades. Something that obviously wasn't the case in the early '80s, because video games were a relatively new medium at the time.

Funny stuff seen as I have been gaming since the c64 days, not all the ps generation is ignorant like what you claim, infact I was there myself to witness the fall of gaming back in the atari days.

Honestly you are wrong about nintendo, all they have been doing is re-releasing mario and zelda for the past 20 years same story, different gameplay mechanics and some graphics upgrades.

Sony has actually brought more variety to gaming, which is why the ps dominated for two whole generations it was not just a simple graphic tweak as you suggested, we actually saw new things in games that was not simply possible on the SNES or anything before them, so sony innovate in their own way they do it by bringing us different games which are totally fresh and not just the same old rehash which get's forgotten because it's only kids that don't know that mario has been using the same formula for a long time, not that it's bad thing, but nintendo only innovated by changed the form of game controls .

Don't even bring xbox in here because it only caters towards one thing and it is the sad reason why we are all flooded with the same kind of game, yes it's the horrible FPS....

I am also sorry for thinking that people who could disagree with your opinion could be reasonable persons, but reading your post once more made me realize that you considered all the facts when you formed your conclusions. hmm well I don't think we should worry too much...cuz let's face it, SOny and MS have a line up of solid games for the normal control as well..if we get flooded with shovelware liek for the wii, then we can always not buy them and go for the games catered for the normal controllers...Motion controllers are NOT the highest priority for them

And maybe I'm wrong but I would imagine making games for the HD counterparts will be more expensive which will also help reduce the issue..so dw ;)
