Answer to Alex59's Question: Yes, the PS3 will dominate the Wii. Just give it time
Sulla: to extrapolate the past into the future may lead to wrong assumptions. Nintendo started with a 250$ system Sony with a 600$ system. I would imagine the money spend for all ps3s is as high as the money spent for all wiis. Or to rephrase it 12 months from now when the ps3 costs 300$ and the wii 200$ and the big franchises of the ps3 like mgs and ffxiii have come out we will have a better view on how this generation will end.
For a product that has a life of 7 years you will always have the choice to make it hightech and expensive in the beginning and sell more later or cheaper and sell more in the beginning.
RolStoppable said: The console that sells the most early on will receive the most games. The console with the most games will see the most sales. In the videogame industry you can't afford to have half the sales of your competition in the beginning. The launch of a system and its performance in the first year with competition in the market are the most important factors for long time success. |
Tell that to the Sega Genesis.
Like the guns n roses song says, all you need is patience. PS3 will pull ahead, like Nelson from the simpsons said above me, when the ps3 like 300 approx and the Wii is like 200ish, then the games will make the difference, not the small price difference and the gimmick they call motion control.
Little Big Planet is a wii game on PS3 it would only do well if was on the Wii I sure I'm not the only person who thinks this.

The question should be (will the PS3 be dominating anything this gen). Yah it might be selling somewhat better in Europe right now, but 50,000 more per week during the holiday season in Europe, and Japan and bout tied worldwide is not going to lessen that gap any time soon. And hell might just break loose if Microsoft decides to drop the price of the 360.
RolStoppable said: Which part of my post are you refering too? I guess the first paragraph? In that case I have to say that Nintendo had control over japanese publishers (either make games exclusive for our system or don't make games for us at all), so Sega never could get their games, thus the Genesis never could take off in Japan. The lack of big japanese games also had an impact on american sales of the Genesis. Sadly, the shipment data of VGChartz doesn't go back far enough to be sure how big the lead of the Genesis was once the SNES launched, but by March 1993, the Genesis had shipped 14.9m units worldwide. So it's likely that the actual lead of the Genesis was in the range of 3-5m by the time the SNES launched. |
I think you are confusing the Sega Genesis (Sega Mega Drive) with the Sega Master System, which was deterred from a lot of third party support due to the little "monopoly" Nintendo had enacted. If anything, Genesis saw an exodus of developers, who once only made games for the Nintendo.
And yes, my post was directed at your first paragraph because the Genesis sold considerably well early-on, it had a bigger library compared to the SNES even during the SNES's second year, in some cases it sold more than the SNES because the SNES cost more, yet, even before Sega started investing in the Sega CD and all those other crappy add-ons, people claim that Sega's marketshare wasn't all that commanding: 51:49.
Sega did everything right, yet it wasn't enough as the SNES was catching up.

Is there any place where you can actually look up some early sales information of the 4th gen? Sega did pretty much everything right until they started with the add ons. But the SNES could catch up because it still had the majority of big japanese games. |
Even with the Japanese developers on board, those games were still a dime a dozen compared to the library Sega currently had in 91-92.
Everything you said in that first post, Sega had in spades, yet, that wasn't enough. Thus proving,"The console with the most games will see the most sales," to be untrue. Now if you meant lifetime, then I can see where you are going, as all those add-ons just ruined Sega.
I don't have a web site that shows precise numbers from that time, but I did watch a show on TV that talked about the SNES and Genesis, and it probably was '92 or '93 because this was a little before the release of the Sega CD, and Sega's market share at the time was only 51 percent compared to Nintendo's 49.
| Kyros said: "Not really PS3 has only a couple of big exclusives in 2008, it won't tip the balance against the 360 in NA, Price still plays into 360's hands, especially since Blu-ray isn't an issue for most consumers" A couple of big exclusives? lol Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Killzone2, MGS4, Little Big Planet. As dominating as the 360 was 2007 game-wise, this has completely reversed. So lets wait and see. See it this way. 2007 the 360 had Bioshock, Mass Effects, Forza2 and Halo3 and it didn't manage to outsell the PS3 decisively worldwide? I would be really surprised if the PS3 doesn't outsell the 360 by a good margin 2008 worldwide. "Yeah a PS3 or a 360, not any one in particular, which is why it helps the Wii, Wii gets all of its pie, while PS3 and 360 fight over the same pie, hence the red ocean VS. the blue ocean" A littlebit confusing. But yes the Wii and the PS3/360 have completely different gaming libraries. The Wii is pretty much Nintendo only. The PS3/360 have the rest. At the moment Nintendo is doing the impossible and beating the rest. But I do not know if they can continue to do so. |
Yeah most of those won't be big, at least not in Japan, MGS never sells that much, nor does Killzone, LBP might, who know, really that leaves FF and GT, and GT5 prolougue did mediocre, so I don't think GT5 has a lot of hope of lighting up the sales.
As long as they have stuff like Wii Fit, ninty will be just fine
Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)
| Ajax said: of course the wii's got a couple games like resident evil and metroid but that doesn't change the focus of the system i can picture a guy standing in the shop and thinking about buying a ps3 or a 360 but i can't picture him thinking 'or should i buy a ps3 and play haze, killzone, metal gear or should i buy a wii and play wiiplay, mario, wiifit, metroid and mario & sonic' that's all or o.k. i could picture one or two kids thinking like that, but we all know what the focus of nintendo is |
