I hugely disagree too. in gameplay prt th most, i luvd ff13's gameplay mor thn any rpg this gen. in emotions lost oddesy hs more standout scenes, bt the characters in ff13 i liked as they wer all based on cliches, but devloped in a un clichd way (except for horrible fang). In lost oddessy the chrcters stayed cliched and th kids were annoying.

music in lost oddesy ws very disappointing considering nobuo made it, ff13's battle thems are much bettr thn the lost oddessy ones.

ff13 brought a unique world with it, lost oddesy felt too familiar, ff13 felt new & fresh. ff13 trounces lost oddesy evrywher xcept for emotion scenes

in this gen for me mass effect 2, tales of vesperia & ff13 stnd leagues above other RPG's

Accusing the LO cast of being particularly cliche is kind of... odd. What part of them came across that way to you?

And, uh

Could you link to the two best FF13 battle themes? I'll do the same for LO, for comparison's sake.

ff13 battle themes i found amzing:

ur turn.

i will answer ur LO chrcter question, need to put together my thoughts on it, bt no chrcter surprised me with wht their actions r in LO. they stayed in the "cliched barrier", in ff13 in parts the chrcters came out of tht barrier & developed into sumthing else, chapter 7 hs my favrite chrcter developmnt in it

Lost Odyssey.

Without a doubt the best JRPG this gen.

Proper JRPG battle system. Great ring system. Battles are always tough. And it has probably the best scripting of the genre since FF7.

I loved it.

Not better graphics than FF13. But better everything else.

Final Fantasy 7?!! You mean the Final Fantasy 7 with a horrible translation?!! Wow.....just wow.

I nearly chortled with laughter after seeing that too.

How do you view scripting. Word for word? Or how it pans?

After all JRPG i probably the worst genre in history for scripting, but we cant compare FF7 to other genres. Now Grandia 2 was great. But that was laughable scripting.

Word for word if thats the case FF12 has the best scripting out of the main FF's & thats my least liked one....but I admit it has the best dialogue/writing

If its on how it pans out FF6 trounces every FF to hell & back. rofl.

Yeah I agree, with FF6 beating FF7. But I meant since FF7's script which is the last one I really liked in JRPG's, that LO was a new refreshing game. Although it probably has the worst bad guy in history. LOL

Worst bad guy in history.....I haven't played LO but you seriously need to play HAZE before calling anything in any games story the "worst"

FF7 & FF8 were the last FF's with truly Epic plot imo, no RPG since has had stories that live up to FF7/8 plot's (IMO....I know some people hated FF8's & FF7's plot)......let alone matching FF6.

But thats not because of the script though.

@akibafan

FAIL you didn't list the BEST one

No way. I'm with you. FF7 and 8 were both great. Some may not agree with me, but the whole Immortal plotline of LO was right up there with those. LO is on a more personal level though to the main characters. Whereas FF7 and 8 was a little more towards overall plot. Thats the difference. But yeah loved both FF7 and 8. Loved the actual world of FF9 to. Thought the drawings were awesome in 9.

If your a JRPG fan, borrow a friends 360 and play it if you dont want to buy one. Worth the experience for the fan of the genre imo. Proper turn based old school system as well. Loved it.

I'll be trying to play it in some way!

I'll be replaying FF9 soon, I loved it but its not in my personal top 5 FF's.

I asked for two. You couldn't just give me two?

Commenting as I listen.

1. Barthandelus: Interesting, but actually fairly boring. Having a choir chant a little bit doesn't make for a particularly engaging composition. Lacks melody.

2. Eidolons: I initially thought this was going to be better, but it suffers from the same problem as the first song in that there's very little in the way of zeniths or nadirs in the sound (I don't know how to phrase this) and it's consistently unexciting.

3. L'Cie: Same problem, again. I think the problem here is that this feels mostly like techno. Maybe it needs context to b engaging? It's not, the way you're presenting it.

4. Saber's Edge: Okay this is very nice. Feels like it builds and builds, like you're getting into a part where you are supposed to be whooping ass.

I said I'd offer two, so here they are:

A Formidable Enemy Appears!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMqIBDpGKmQ

Battle Conditions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZX5yRvBblA

This is not dipping into stuff like the final boss theme, which constitutes a spoiler for me.

Anyway:

I'm not sure that what you're describing is a cliche, it just mans that they're consistently characterized. Unless you also imply that none of them change, in which case you are incorrect. I ask again: what of them was cliche?

Khuutra, since he mentioned 4 themes, add these two songs to your list:-

Dark Saint: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv6_bDfnHGc

Howl of The Departed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vbsI9xFuo8

I left those out on purpopse, Fab, since they're kind of spoiler songs.

They are quite excellent though.

I have the same problem with the above 2 themes that you seemed to have with the Barthandelus theme, they both lacked melody. Meh none of you even put the main LO battle theme in your lists that I found on youtube which is rather spectacular actually, especially when that tune begins around the 1 minute mark.
