Forums - Gaming - Alan Wake: Worst case of product placement in history of videogames?

I saw this on the G4 website:

http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/704876/Alan-Wake-The-Worst-Product-Placement-In-Gaming-History.html

I was wondering if anyone wanted to comment here about that.  The Verizon ad on TV seems WAY out of place.  I was thinking that ads and product placement can fit into about any game, if done right.  HOWEVER, if it is done wrong, it is horrible.  I can understand Verizon ad on the TV, but why is it all exciting when you are in the middle of a tense movie with a mood that say "fear" in the game (based on what I saw on the video).

Anyone want to comment here?

I didn't have a problem with it.  You had been turning on TV's the entire game that were kind of expanding the game universe.  This one with the  commercial on it just happened to not be possessed or showing an episode of Night Springs.  So what else would be on but a commercial?  I thought it was kind of humorous.  Plus you could of skipped by it and it was an easy 5 gamer points.  So it really didn't bother me in the least bit.

I kinda agree....belike playing Halo and a fugn cola ad comes out of nowhere.

I didn't notice the ad (didnt turn on the TV) or the Xbox 360 but I did notice the BIG ASS Verizon billboard near the middle-end of the game. I mean, it's IMPOSSIBLE to miss it, you're driving and BAM out of the shadows is this lighted billboard with Verizon on it. Me and my brother laughed our asses off, it seemed so out of place. In all honesty, it took me out of the game for a little bit, which for a psychological thriller, is not a good thing.

The Energizer ad's weren't that bad, but in like episode 3 or 4 as a cutscene ended, I was getting out of my car and this huge Verizon billboard just stood out right in front of me and that was kinda a wtf moment. It kinda disrupt's the game a little when your so immersed in it.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

Yea. I noticed all of these things as well. I found it funny, but only because so many people were complaining and bitching about the product placement in MGS4 and Peace Walker (many xbox fans) and yet no one mentioned this or all the Dr. Pepper adverts in Splinter Cell: Conviction. I thought it was handled a lot better in the mgs games as items and such and not just billboards.

If the ads fit into the context of the finished game, I don't see problems being there. This just seemed to be out of place from what I saw.

Product placements this obtrusive, are usually a sign of desperation to raise money. I remember when Sir-Tech was forced to sell Advertisement Spaces for Wizardry 8.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Theres also the Ford Sync product placement as well. Its quite well done if you remember the first scenes.

Tease.

I loved it! It made the game feel more real.
