the first game didn't sell, it's not a wise decision to make a sequel with high development costs.

By that logic Call of Duty should have sold like crap on the consoles this gen too. Or previous Batman games tanked hard so obviously not a series that could sell a few million with the right team developing and the right marketing.

I'm personally still trying to find a GC or PC version of the original Beyond Good & Evil, I've only heard good things so it's kinda sad if a game just as good was in the making was cancelled, especially given Ubisofts track record, they need some better titles (opinion and I mean better titles that fit my tastes), though the crap they put out does fairly well sales wise.

o_O Nice, when I have 10 dollars to spare I'll pick it up, I didn't even know they put it up on steam, though I thought about checking after making that post lol thanks for doing the leg work

I thought the canellation was confirmed a while ago.

This was one of those games I wanted to play back when I had a PS2, but never got 'round to getting it. I even had a demo disc with a playable demo on it and enjoyed playing those bits.

I suppose if BG&E 2 was ever released it would go the same way as BG&E with me. I'd be interested, but probably never get 'round to buying / playing it.

Human translation:

Scoop! Sources close to Ubisoft Montpellier (yes, we are from Montpellier) have revealed that Michel Ancel quit the Beyond Good & Evil 2 boat and left to found another studio (whose name hasn't been told to us) with one of his star developers (again, no names given).

Also, according to the same source, that change is due to internal problems with Ubisoft during the (already quite advanced) development of Beyong Good & Evil 2. Ancel is said to have expressed a wish to come back to more classical games (2D style).

Logic dictates that the creative process behind BGE 2 is again paused, there is even talk of a straight cancellation of the project. It remains to wait for an official announcement from either parties. Know however that this news is not a rumor and should be confirmed in the coming weeks (at E3 for example). Finally, Michel Ancel shouldn't be leaving Ubisoft's protective wing* and we do not know in what conditions the "deal" took place.

*lit: Ubisoft's lap but using lap loses the meaning in translation.

I loved the first one and if the second one does come out then I hope that it will be as good.

Alsom if Michel Ancel goes back to doing some 2D games then I will be looking forward to his future games.

Kill it, cancel it, forget it ever existed! Yes!!!!!!!

U sarcastic right? Cos I thought BG&E was ur tipe of game.

I love the first game, and I don't want a really horrible sequel to tarnish its legacy.

The first one had really nice graphics and art direction.  Everything had lots of color and personality.  The sequel wanted to throw out that style and make it all gritty and photorealistic.  It's like making Mario Galaxy and then making the sequel look like Gears of War.  Or making the next Katamari look like Modern Warfare.

And they said they wanted to make the sequel more accessible and easier, with more minigames and things like that.  And even though they wanted to steal the casual crowd with this sequel, they were going to put it on everything but the Wii.  It's like they wanted to alienate the fans of the original game, and they wanted it to flop.

They wanted the best of both worlds: hardcore gritty graphics, and casual watered down gameplay.  They were killing one of my favorite games in two ways at once, and I am glad to see them change their minds and cancel it.

I highly recommend the first game to everybody, especially if it's only $10 on Steam now.  It's got 3rd person melee combat, great stealth scenes, exploration, and photography.  There's a lot of stuff to do, but the pacing is great.  It reminded me of Starship Troopers, Zelda, and Pokemon Snap.

Oh, I understand your perspective then. I didn't know that so many details about BG&E 2 were out, about gritty style and minigames. Well, from the trailer it was quite obvious that they indeed wanted the sequel to be more "badass".
