Forums - General - Kids these days have it so great...

I never thought I'd turn into an "I walked to school in the snow 2 miles uphill both ways" kinda guy, but man kids have it so great these days.
(Born in '81 FYI)

Family cars have standard DVD players in the back, so you can be entertained for any road trip.

The Nintendo DS absolutely puts to shame the handhelds I got to play... actually my parents bought me an Atari Lynx instead of a Game Boy because they thought it would be better... boy were they wrong...

There's more stuff, too.  Schools were never air conditioned in the 80's/90's.  Sometimes 1 or 2 rooms that might be particularly hot (like the Band room or gym or auditorium IIRC) would be, but now like the whole school is air conditioned, and even the school buses too!

Anyway, just my $.02 for the day.

You should listen to the shit they say and get away with.

I was born in 1990.

I grew up without internet, cable, and videogames. I played with Lego's.

It wouldn't be until 2001 when I first played something other than Kirby's Dream Land on my brother's Game Boy.

The public high school I attended my last two years of school wasn't air conditioned. Only certain rooms. And the buses definitely weren't air conditioned. The gyms in that school weren't air conditioned either.

My mom's Dodge Caravan was a piece of shit. And the Mercury Villager and Saturn Vue we had after that didn't come with DVD players and little TVs.

I was born in 1976. We had a gas powered TV that only showed one channel--and at midnight, that one channel went off the air!!! I used to have to fake being hungry just to go to the restaurant that had a Pac-Man arcade machine. Now, you kids have it on your cell phone. 3D movies, cartoon networks, robot chickens!! In my day, chickens were made of meat!!

Damn kids.

If you think about it, isn't that probably what people born in the 60's and 70's would say about your childhood, our childhood?(Born in the 80s as well)

Not too long ago, I watched the movie Jack (where Robin Williams plays the 40-year-old-looking 10-year-old).  One of the big pluses of being friends with Jack was he could buy a Playboy without getting ID'd.  Nowadays 12 year olds who are probably smarter than their parents at setting parenta controls have access to, well, 2g1c and more.

And I mean, last night the movie Can't Hardy Wait was on TV and Preston had to drive around to find a payphone and got upset when someone hung it up on him.  No cell phones!  And that was just 1998!  Amazing how the world can change in a decade...

It's just more fun to get mad at children whenever technology progresses--"What?  You have a video i-Pod?  Why, in my day, i-Pods just played music!"  I think I'll find a baby and yell at it right now.  It's very therpeutic!

Magazines dude.

I accidentally found some playboy, penthouse and all that good stuff in my older brother's drawer when I was looking for some socks.

That shit changed my life for a whole year!

yeah, especially those kids in africe with no clean water and whose parents work in slave like conditions, they have it so great nowadays.

and what about here in the west, we still have kids living in poverty too, but hey we all know how a pitance of a wage and barely enough to survive on is living it up on the dole though right?

perspective, sometimes I think most human beings are born incapable of gaining it.
