Sony secures HBO deal for PlayStation 3

Sony Computer Entertainment America has secured a deal with Time Warner's HBO channel to offer programmes such as True Blood, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage on the PlayStation 3.

Eleven HBO series' will be on offer to begin with, with content to be added every Tuesday. The shows will air around 11 months after premiering on the HBO network, around the same time they appear on DVD, and will sell for a premium price of $2.99 per episode.

"HBO is a high-profile content provider, and a real premium service, so we think this really reinforces that the PlayStation is more than just a videogame console now," said Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony PlayStation, speaking to NASDAQ.

"It gives consumers that big-screen, HD experience in the home on a device other than cable and satellite, and that's becoming the norm now as opposed to the exception. Networks like HBO can be beholden to the cable and satellite companies, or they can play wherever the consumers play."

The time lag between broadcast on HBO and the PlayStation 3 will help continue to serve cable and satellite subscribers, said HBO president Henry McGee, who said that digital distirbution is a growing part of the HBO business.

"We can use this platform to reinforce the premium positioning for HBO," he said. "The download business in general has become an important profit contributor for us. It's not yet nearly as large as the physical sales channel, but the trend is a good one."

My take:

When I saw the headline I thought this was great news; HBO do amazing shows (Rome, The Wire, True Blood, The Pacific). BUT, not only are the shows 11 months late, they're charging $2.99 per episode?! WTF? Who thought up this pricing scheme?! If you want downloadable media to do well, make it cheaper than physical. The boxsets are cheaper per episode and have a load of extras.

This has to be one of the dumbest deals Sony has done, seriously, 11 months?

I also thought it was fail when I first read but it's not after I did some research. First off, Rome, True Blood and Sopranos are the only shows that are U$2.99 for SD episodes, regular SD episodes on PSN are U$1.99 and HD are U$2.99. Those shows are the exact same prices on itunes, that is, they are U$2.99 for SD on itunes as well and they're not even up on Zune marketplace, so the price is the same as their competitors, and is set by Warner.

As far as the 11 month thing, that is also set by Warner and also affects their competitors, case in point, cable TV Shows will have a delay to keep their premium status intact for the cable providers, for example, Showtime's biggest TV series, Dexter, is up on PSN, Zune and itunes, but Season 4 is not up on any of them because it just ended this past December.

Where PSN fails is where itunes and XBL marketplace have more shows from networks already on PSN, like Married with Children, Cougar Town and Desperate Housewives and more networks that are not yet available on PSN, like NFL football tv

PSN premium subscribers may get this content for a discounted price? Though I imagine discounts for premium subscribers will be for Sony owned stuff so that the money all stays in-house.

don't care. i don't stream tv show or movies anyway.

People pay for this stuff? Let's see, $3 an episode or $10/mo for HBO and all episodes on demand as well as tons of movies, or free online through PS3 browser.

It's the 'start up' content as of 'now'...they said they will be updating it every week
so kinda too early cry doomzed imo

I don't understand why people single out Sony for their pricing scheme on their movies when itunes and XBL/Zune marketplace is the same price and no one complains about them?

If someone's smart enough to pay for it i don't blame Sony for putting it up on the PS3.
