I would actually recommend either anthology or chronicles both can be obtained for 15 bucks new. Chronicles gets you FFII in America as well as Chrono Trigger Anthology gets you Final Fantasy V and VI or US III.

I can't stress this statement enough lol :)
Id skip the first 3, and maybe play 4, 6, 7,8,9, etc... the thing is I would skip XI, and maybe VII is a good start, or VI, anyway, I think you will enjoy any of the ones I said if you dont expect them to be masterpeices, which is why many people end up dissapointed.

in all honesty as someone like yourself who hasnt played a ff yet 13 will blow you away the most
Play IX first.
Ok, play any other Final Fantasy than XIII because it is so different, it is a really dumbed down experience. My personal favorite is VII, I played X first and it was ok to start out at imo.

oldshool JRPG's are great for story, FF XIII is more gameplay and oooh teh pretty orientated
