Forums - Gaming - Western developers are ruling Japanese developers this gen!

I don't know, it might be more of a 360 issue.

I have quite a few Japanese titles :

MGS4, Re5, Demon's Souls, Bayonetta, DMC4, FFXIII, KWC, Star Ocean 4, Soul Calibur 4,...

It's not a 360 issue. Half the Japanese games you listed are on the 360 as well. Secondly he's talking about really strong AAA japanese made titles. The Japanese make games for all systems but Sony and Microsoft have the most similar offerings. The west is just doing it better this gen. Sony doesn't have more western devs than Japanese devs for no reason.

I don't think the line is as obvious between japanese and western developers as it once was.

I mean...can you really tell RE5 was done by Japan? How about Dead Rising? I really can't tell as they both play like a lot of western developed games...

That's why I always loved Capcom games :)

They get points for Dead Rising which is awesome... but Resident Evil 5 is a catastrophy.

"Lets take a 5 year old game that was amazing back then but surpassed today and make it 1/2 the length, unplayable in single player, make the story and characters laughable. We will keep the dated controls and add coop. Everyone loves coop!"

Ironically, RE5 is the best selling game in the franchise >_<

I don't see Western developers making Japanese flavored games so putting them to fight becomes pretty much pointless to me. I love both Western and Jap games.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

even though i like almost all kinds of games, western developers tend to go to the high budget blockbuster movie-like feel, that is very forgettable.

while japanese games tend to have a certain old school video game charm to them

I live for the sword, the steel, and the gun...

That's because Japanese developers have seriously dropped the ball in this gen (if you are on the HD consoles).

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

While I agree with the rest but what do u mean it's unplayable in single player?

This varies based on platform. On my 360 all but one game is western but on my Wii its all but 3 games are Japanese. I think this generation more evened it out. Now when you say Western you mean pretty much everything but Japan. But lets be fare isn't it more American? Europe seems to be catching up as well but Canadian and US publishers seem to be increasing their presence every generation.

I'm the complete opposite. On ps3 14 out of the 27 titles I own are Japanese, and on Wii all 13 titles I own are Japanese.

I would blame that more on SCEJ resting on their laurels and not buying or opening more studios beyond SCE Japan Studio (which contains Team ICO, to any who asks) and Polyphony Digital, while SCEA and SCEE have been buying up studios and expanding the oens they already own developers like mad.

Which I suppose in and of itself backs up the claim that Western studios are outperforming Eastern studios this gen, though I'd still disgree.

Japan => 125 million (population)
Western => Almost the rest of the world?

In a timeperiod where we see a rise of more devs in even small countries in Europe I am not surprised about this ^^'

But yeah I am less enjoying Japanese games this gen than last gen.
