Forums - Sales - Reasons for the slow sales of Alan Wake?

Disappointing for very few who actually have the game. Mostly it is those who don't even own a 360 or PC owners who are disappointed.

I agree with this. The majority of people on here who have played the game from what I can tell have really liked it, including myself. I'm just waiting until it gets dark enough to continue the second episode now.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

Poor Marketing - Many average players have never heard of it.

Unexciting title - It's an unknown name to players.

That being said I don't think the sales of the game are going to be that bad. If the pre-order charts are right it should be good for 150k-200k sales in America this week. European sales shouldn't be to bad this week either considering it only had a couple days worth of sales there.

It could be a case where word of mouth keeps it going for a while. It's a fantastic game, hopefully sells well.

SMG2 and RDR overshadowed what isn't an astonishing game as some may claim, but a rather good game, as anyone can see by its metacritic score.

I think overhype and bad release date caused Alan Wake to flop.

I'm really doubting that this game can even reach half a million now.

Really?? We haven't even seen the week one numbers from NA, much less any week twos to know how it's going to hold up and you're ready to call it <500k lifetime?  I'll bet you any terms you're willing to name that it will break 500k, and within a month of release at that...

Being released for one day in one territory might have something to do with its slow sales.

By the way, are the lead characters in Heavy Rain all that attractive? People said Alan Wake is ugly, so that is why the game sold badly. Well, how about the characters in Heavy Raid? Also, are the characters in Red Dead attractive?

Slow sales? We only have a single Others week's data and it did incredibly! I don't think we can say the game sold badly just because some people over hyped it and their expectations were too high

I was actually responding to the OP, but oh well.

I would say the only reason that Alan Wake isn't selling as fast as many expected, is because many people expected too much. For many months before Alan Wake's launch I cautioned people that if they overhyped Alan Wake's sales potential (as opposed to its potential to be awesome) then they would be dissapointed. The fact that so many people are dissapointed kinda shows I was right

It is a new IP, and would appear completely foreign to you stereotypical 18-20 year old frat boy types. Horror based on good plot and the buildup of tension throughout rather than simple "loud noises whilst things jump out at other things and then there is blood" horror has never sold well. Unless you can quote one of the developers/publishers expectations that are not being met, then I shall continue to perceive this game as a success

Alan Wake being ugly has no impact on sales. But I agree that he is ugly.

Slow sales because of bad release time frame. It's up against Red Dead, Mario Galaxy 2 and Lost Planet 2.

Also because it's a new IP that got very minimal marketing.

I also found it very amusing that some people said that AW would be a system seller a few months ago because I knew it wouldn't be one.

I really think the hype was solely an internet based thing. Kinda like Zack and Wiki. I was never overly hyped about it, though kept aware of it due to this website. Never really heard anyone talk about it unlike other games...
