Tutorials are not fun. More people play games with less tutorials that have "pick up and play" style gameplay. Hence, New Super Mario Bros sells twice as much as any 3d Mario. Wii Play, Mario Kart, Just Dance, etc. all have those qualities. Even you can not admit that you "enjoy" tutorials. You identify them as a necessity to learning the game, but not as an enjoyable element in and of itself. Think of the "newcomer" to gaming. These are people that are not interested in gaming in the first place. Do you honestly think the majority of them are going to have the patience to sit through tutorial content? Why is dying and trail and error considered a bad thing? It is only a bad thing if the game is unfair and the player feels cheated. This is true with 3d Mario, where the imprecise nature of the controls is frustrating. A good game lets the player die but leaves a strong desire in them to try again and again and again (2d Mario is excellent at this). I am not saying that I don't enjoy Super Mario Galaxy 2. It is a fun game and it's certainly better than most of the games out there, but it is not perfect. There are problems, and people should know. Not everyone is inside this circle of 3d Mario love. I'm certainly not. This doesn't mean that you or anyone else that likes this game has bad taste in games, it just means that different people have different values for the games that they play. Still, the massive hype and love is causing people to overlook the flaws, which is natural in the first week. The same thing happens with a lot of core games. Remember Grand Theft Auto 4? People were going crazy when it came out. Now the craziness is subsided and people are seeing the game for what it really is. This is why metacritic is such a bad method of identifying the quality of a game. It measures game journalists thoughts just as the game is released. People's perspectives change though after a while.

yes, i do not think tutorials are that fun. but do i think they can be necessary, yes, to the newcomer. i just dont see so many of these people that prefer to charge headlong into a game and not know what they are doing. im certain there are people that do that, but i dont think they are the majority. trial and error is certainly not a bad thing, but it can be for alot of newcomers who would die alot and then decide games are to hard/not for them. pick up and play games are certainly fun (i have a few) and do not need tutorials, but those games are often very simple and perfect for a newcomer. but think about it from the perspective of someone who wants to get into more complex games. maybe they will need a tutorial to figure out the gameplay. that is what they are for, are they not?
every game has flaws and no game is perfect. some may say it is perfect for its franchise or for its genre, but it is not a perfect game as a whole, galaxy 2 is no exception. but the things you see as flaws others may not. i certainly dont see the tutorials as flaws and i dont think 3d mario games are that imprecise or frustrating. actually, i get more frustrated with 2d mario games than 3d ones and the 3d games give me more of an incentive to keep trying for the star. this does not make 2d mario games bad games in the least however and i still like those game alot.
i just dont think that nearly everybody who got this game and liked it are just victims to hype. some may be, but not everyone. and perhaps people are overlooking flaws, but that doesnt mean they dont know what they are playing. these "flaws" probably arent that big of a deal to these people and doesnt take away from their experience, which at the end of the day is most important.
and yes, people's perspectives do change. im sure there will be a mario game that comes along in the future that i will like more that Galaxy 2, but that wont automatically mean that i dont love galaxy 2 anymore. even today i still love the first galaxy eventhough i think galaxy 2 is better.
"Not everyone is inside this circle of 3d Mario love. I'm certainly not. This doesn't mean that you or anyone else that likes this game has bad taste in games, it just means that different people have different values for the games that they play." i am, which is one reason i love this game. i also personally like the 3d games more than the 2d games. i find more fun in them. i admit, i was hyped and excited for galaxy 2 and i have not been dissapointed. this is probably the case for alot of people. like you said, everyone has their own taste in games, and that means anyone can get hyped for their favorite genre/IP. your werent, and thats fine, but that doesnt mean other people cant be hyped for a game and not be dissapointed to.
