Forums - Gaming - Square Enix: “Only Macho Protagonists Work in the West”

The Queendom of Falena is a relatively rich land sustained by the Feitas River, which connects its disparate parts and enables trade and communication. It is ruled by Queen Arshtat and her husband Ferid, who have been a balancing and steady force since the demise of her somewhat rash mother. However, the tensions of the past have not been entirely settled. Arshtat's mother and aunt had been engaged in a covert struggle for power over the succession. Falena's government also has powerful nobles who maintain their own separate forces, loyal to them. Arshtat's hand in marriage was seen as key to gaining power in the future by the nobles; a civil war was narrowly averted when Ferid, a neutral outsider, won the Sacred Games and thus the right to marry Arshtat.

Suikoen 5?

Maybe I should've wrote Suikodn 2/3's description, they were amazing.

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

ask kojima for advise he learned the har way not to use ( fat ass blond) girly heroes and created one of the coolest heroes ever.

You know what's funny?  Kojima has stated on several occasions that the inspiration for Solid Snake was Snake Pliskin from Escape From New York which was a cult classic movie featuring an extremely hard assed antihero.  My point is this...

He was influenced by a stereotype of what outsiders think that Americans think is cool.  Don't get me wrong, Snake Pliskin is cool and so is Clint Eastwood, but we don't need all of our protagonists to be hard asses.  Why else would Tom Cruise be a star?

Suikoden 5 was great. I loved the whole Queendom idea. Having a matriarchal society as the setting was nice change.

Most Western gamers like macho characters because they are worried people will think they're gay otherwise. There is a lot of insecurity among American geeks.

Its hilarious how a large amount of Western gamers will rather play a game staring a large muscular man and tons of gore or a guy parading around in tight spandex.  But put down people for playing a game like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest which focuses on women with revealing outfits and cute expressions.

And yet the people who play the game with the shirtless MACHO MAN is somehow suppose to be the more secure with his masculinity.

Yeah, I have been saying for awhile that western male gamers are obsessed with masculinity. It's not just the stereotypical Halo/Gears of War/God of War obsessed wannabe fratboy though that is insecure of their masculinity though. Plenty of Japanophiles are too. You know the types who are like "all these new videogames these days are pussified shit. Real gamers play hardcore games like Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man." They too have a masculinity complex. Just like how Halo players measure the size of their e-dick by how many n00bs they pwn online, the Japanophile measures the size of their e-dick by how "hardcore" they are. Same thing. You definitely have douchebags playing Halo, Gears, Call of Duty online but honestly I personally haven't seen a shortage of douchebaggery online among say Blazblue players for example. When you have anonymity + internet, that's to be expected.

Oh yea I love me macho protagonists

But seriously this is stupid, I haven't played Nier or seen what either characters look or act like.

I could care less who the protagonist is as long as they aren't just some stupid girl like Vanille.
I'd rather not have a macho protagonist, just a regular size person with a normal attitude is fine!
