The 360's goal isn't to make money for MS. I just have to laugh at that one. If Sony wanted the PS to take over computers and disrupt MS sales, which they don't, why in the hell would they release their own laptops with Windows installed? They wouldn't. They would make the PS a full computer and have have their own OS similar to Windows. That is never going to happen, since the PS consoles will always be focused on gaming first. The reason MS got into the console market is because they thought they could rise to the top and make the kind of money Sony was making off the PS 1&2. It didn't happen. And there is a reason to bring up the 360, since your basis for the PS3 being a failure was its losses for Sony. Just wanted to point out how hypocritical you were being. Also, wait till the end of next year and we'll see if MS has still sold more consoles.
Alas, Microsoft
Still, he explained his uncertainty. “Remember that Microsoft partly entered the game console business for defensive reasons,” Rosoff said. “The company was concerned that a PlayStation successor would become the default gateway to networked entertainment in the home—Ken Kutaragi promised as much—and cut into consumer PC sales.”
Demand does not equal quantity demanded. Really? Here is a little Supply & Demand 101. If there is no demand for a product then a product does not sell. If a product does not sell then there is no reason stores will run out of supply so quickly (Amazon ran out of stock just weeks after getting a new shipment). Besides, just looking at the fact PS3 has been up YOY consistantly proves their is higher demand for it.
From Wikipedia
The basic demand relationship is between the price of a good and the quantity supplied. Generally the relationship is negative or inverse meaning that an increase in price will induce a decrease in the quantity demanded.
The demand curve is a two dimensional depiction of the relationship between price and quantity demanded. Movements along the curve occur only if there is a change in quantity demanded caused by a change in the goods own price. A shift in the demand curve, referred to as a change in demand, occurs only if a non-price determinant of demand changes.
If there is a shortage, why are sales so low? First, they aren't that low. Sony has been outselling MS every week WW since the Slim was launched. Was outselling Nintendo, as well, until the Wii price drop. However, I have no doubt that the PS3's sales would be slightly higher if they could meet demand. Now, Wii did have shortages, which I think have been dealt with. But at the time of the shortages, Nintendo was probably either just making demand or only falling slightly behind. And for people to even suggest that Nintendo or Sony created false demand but shipping less is just stupid. Nintendo already made profit off the Wii, so it would be in their best interest to sell more consoles, and in turn more software and controllers. Sony was said to be losing ~$20 for each PS3 sold. They could have easily recouped that loss with the purchase of an extra contoller and/or game, and then gone on to make even more profit with more software purchases. It's in the companies' best interest to get as many consoles out there as possible. Even VGC had this stated on a list for dumb gaming rumors.
As I've mentioned before, people aren't rushing to stores to buy them and shipments seem to stick around for a while. So, I doubt it's being held back a lot. Remember, Nintendo was still beating the competition silly when they had a shortage. Sony is still under Nintendo. They were only up for 5 weeks last year before Wii sales jumped. Seeing as how low the sales are with a shortage, it is likely a forced shortage. Sales are higher, but by about 50,000 so either they never shipped very much or they are shipping less. I think it is the later.
I was wrong though in that I thought the PS3 was still last. It has been beating the 360 though most of this year.
As for Amazon, if you look up a PS3 it will show you one. But, if you look at where it shows who's selling it to you, you will see it is Target. Not Amazon. Now, this is how it has been for the past few weeks. I did just check it today and apparently Amazon FINALLY got a shipment. Actually, it seems Wal-mart finally has them, too. It appears Sony may be finally pumping out the Slims with the new chipsets. Though, Best Buy is still out online. Of course, this doesn't change the fact that both Sony and Nintendo had shortages, with Sony having more severe ones.
Stock has been in for a few days. I was saying this a while back. So, I doubt the shortage is that severe.
