Sony won't ship more old 2000 models than the 'estimated' demand because they are losing money for each sold.

This news basically confirms that shortages in Q1 prevented the PS3 from outselling the 360 by a comfortable margin. A real pity, because Sony could have sold unholy numbers during the month of March.

It didn't. The sales overall have been very low, so we have no idea if they would have sold more or not. Most likely, they would not of.

This shortage is being very over played. This was a shortage from Gamestop. I just checked Amazon and they have PS3s in stock. Target does too. Walmart and Bestbuy are out of the cheaper models, but not of more expensive ones. This is misconception number 2. There have never been an increase in demand that was not seasonal (i.e. Christmas). There has only been an increase in Quanity Demanded. What's the difference? Changes in demand mean that consumers will buy more units at the same price. If Peanut butter is proven to be good for young children, peanut butter sales will go up. When "Supersize Me," came out, demand for McDonalds went down. Quanity Demanded is what we demand at a set price level. When prices goes up, we demand less and when price goes down, we demand more. What is happening to the PS3 is actually very bad. They are not increase in demand like Nintendo is. They only sell more units when the price falls. PS3s are not totally out of stock, just the ones that are cheap. If consumers really had to have PS3s, the refurbished ones and the higher priced ones would be out of stock, but they are not.

In conclusion, the PS3 would have not beated the 360. There is not a huge demand for PS3s, and the sales it would be seeing are from price drops.

in conclusion, no matter what your just one of those people that wuill never admit it. your just jealous of ps3's success and thats all there is to it.

Yes, I'm jealous of a system that has lost a company billions.

Or maybe people need to see the light. PS3 is a failure and there is nothing more too it.

Well, for your sake, I hope you are backing Nintendo, because the 360 has lost MS billions.  And so far, MS still has lost far more from the X-Box brand than it has made.  And your analysis is very poor.  So they are out of stock just about everywhere, and yet demand isn't up?  You do realize stores usually try not to run out of stock on items that actually sell, right?  I mean your logic is that the people who want a PS3 already bought one, but Sony just hasn't got the stores new ones.  New ones that no one will buy.  Sure.  Then how do you explain about a month or so ago when Amazon finally got a shipment of PS3's it shot up to #1 on their video game chart, only to be sold out shortly after?

BTW, Target is the one who has the PS3's on Amazon, not Amazon themselves.  And WWD, who Amazon used to link you to, is now selling them for $400 with shipping.  And you might want to check Wal-mart.com again, as they are completely out of PS3's.  Though, you are right about Best Buy having the more expensive model, however that's not the one that's in high demand.

Lot of misconceptions here.

  • The 360's goal is not to make money, it's to keep Sony from disrupting computers with the Playstation line. Either way, I am not talking about the 360. I'm talking about the PS3. There is no reason to mention it (which, they have done very little this generation besides selling more than Sony)
  • Demand=/=Quanity Demanded. They are two totally different things. Demand is not up for the PS3. Quanity demanded it greater though
  • You are implying a lot of thing, and are implying wrong. Use quotes to back up what you are saying. You might have a clue what is going on.
  • Most of what you said at the end is wrong. If we say there is a shortage, why are sales still low. Nintendo's shortage had the system still outpreforming the 360 and PS3. Why is the PS3 so far behind despite there is a shotage. If you say that "They are not shipping enough," then the numbers they are sending out are far too low for anyone. Most likely there is stratigic shipping going on. Supply and Demand is the one concept everyone gets wrong. Shortages are used by demand exceeding supply. Shotages can be caused by demand going up or supply going down.

The PS3 is out on a lot of sites, but not all of them. I have just added a PS3 to my cart on Amazon for $300. It does not redirect me or anything.
