While the NPD Group recently reported that the retail video game software sales in the month of April were rather lackluster, Microsoft has reported that ‘Splinter Cell: Conviction’ – an Xbox 360 exclusive – sold nearly half a million copies during the month; thereby notching the top slot among rivals.
According to Microsoft, the sales of Conviction managed to beat both Nintendo’s portable Pokemon remakes, as well as Sony’s God of War III – a PS3 exclusive game which had moved over one million units a month earlier.
In addition, Microsoft has also revealed that ‘Halo: Reach’ public beta – which ends May 19 - was a “blockbuster” sensation, claiming the participation of more than one million unique players on its debut day.
Microsoft further added that while its Xbox 360 gaming console was only up 6 points year-on-year in terms of hardware units sold, the company’s software attach rate was 8.8 points. In all, the Xbox 360 platform’s total $204 million across software, hardware, accessory sales, turned out to be “more than any other platform.”
Meanwhile, underscoring Sony PS3’s sales growth in the three categories, with NPD analyst Anita Frazier said that “the PS3 platform is the only one to have enjoyed growth over last year for both the month of April and year-to-date.”
