Forums - Gaming - GTA 4 will sell over 20 million copies PS3+X360

No.

It'll do good. But the fanbase isn't large enough for 20 million. Heck, two consoles combined are barely over 20 million at the moment. It'll be better post holidays, but GTA4 would have to have an unprecedented attach rate to reach those kinds of numbers. The two consoles combined would have to reach at least 50 million in 2008 for that to be even remotely possible, which I sincerely doubt.

Source's numbers are far more realistic.

Gee which version will people choose? The one with extra content on a console with the best game line up this generation (360), or the one on the Console that has only been struggling and has had a lovely track record of glitched and inferior cross platform titles.

It is a mystery.

Here's my predictions.

First Week

Ps3 - 450k (if its lucky)

360 - 3m (at least)

RolStoppable,

I don't want to make the bet because to be honest it would be completely unfair to you. I know it seems like SSBB is getting a lot of buzz (and it is), but GTA is a much bigger franchise. It's like the people that wanted to bet MP3 against Halo 3.

*sniffs*

*sniffs again*

I smell... FEAR.

It seems like Leo-j is trying to give outlandish predictions like John Lucas...albeit not as impressively.

If the PS2, with its enormous audience, could not get 20 million sales for any of its GTA games, there is no way in heck that GTA4 can sell that many copies for the 360 and PS3 combined.

Add me for Pokemon, New Leaf, and Fire Emblem, Mario Kart 8.

Obviously the 360 version will sell more than the PS3 version (install base reasons), unless for some reason this game is delayed into 2009.

As far as reaching 20m sales... no. Just no. Only six games have ever hit 20m sales, EVER, in the entire history of video games. Here's the very short list:

Super Mario Bros Nintendo6.8129.523.9140.24
Pokemon Red / Green / Blue Nintendo10.2311.449.7031.37
Tetris Nintendo4.2423.552.4730.26
Duck Hunt Nintendo0.2827.340.6928.31
Pokemon Gold / Silver Nintendo7.219.146.7523.10
Super Mario World Nintendo3.5512.974.0920.61

(Almost all of these games were bundled too.) Some of the posters on this site like to throw around crazy numbers, but 20m is an unbelievable amount of software. Remember, 20m = Halo + Halo2 + Halo3 combined. It won't happen.

My Website

End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)

Why do they combine sales of different pokemon games like that? I don't think any of those games is a legitimate 20m seller (non-bundled game) unless Tetris wasn't bundled with the Gameboy.

all of those were bundled except for pokemon. Pokemon was helped by some people buying both red and blue, but they should be together because they are the same game.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

I looked up Pokemon Red on Wikipedia and found the following:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokemon_Red

"Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue are the first two installments of the Pokémon series of role-playing video games, first released for the Game Boy in Japan in 1996, later released to the rest of the world in 1998 (North America) and 1999 (Europe and Australia), and are two of the best-selling video games of all time. Set in the fantasy world of Kanto, the game's stories follow the progress of the central character in his quest to master Pokémon battling. Both games are independent of each other but feature largely the same plot and, while both can be played separately, it is necessary for the player to trade among the two in order to fully complete the game."

Im willing to bet the ps3 version of gta 4 will outsell Super smash bro's lifetime sales.

I'll take your bet and also say that SSBB will sell more than DOUBLE what gta4 sells on ps3. What would you like the terms of the bet to be?

@Legend11

I guess you don't own or haven't played the pokémon games in depth, am I rite? The different version (red/blue, etc.) are exactly the same game, the only difference are the presence of some pokémon, that are in one of the games, but they are not on the other. The one version that is different is the third version (yellow/crystal/emerald).

Back on topic, I might be underestimating the casual/teen power of the 360 audience. GTA4 might achieve 10,000,000, but it will be thanks to the 360 version, not the PS3 version. There's no way GTA4-PS3 can outsell Smash Brawl.
