Given all this talk of "true" PC games, I'm going to take a second to rant about Borderlands.  The game is a combination FPS and WRPG, and at it's core feels like it was MADE for PC.  Yet they designed it entirely around consoles, and did one of the weakest ports I've ever seen.  Graphically the game looks and runs fine on PC, but the controls are crap.  The mouse sensitivity is just bad, and unlike every other PC game in the history of PC gaming, they don't let you make use of any of the benefits that come with having a mouse.

In a console game, you click a button to enter a menu, click another to back out of a menu, etc., right?   On a PC game you generally just click on the menus you want to access with the mouse, click on what items you want, etc.   In Borderlands, they left the menus as they were on consoles, so you have to hit a keyboard button to access a menu, scroll to the item you want with the arrow keys, press a different button to buy the item, etc.   It's cumbersome, unintuitive, and annoying.

The mouse sensitivity also completely changes when on a menu, making it laggy and sluggish.   At least it's relatively normal while actually playing, but I guess they had to at least do that to keep the game from being totally broken.

Borderlands is one of those games that should theoretically sell better on PC, given it's mix of genres, but they totally borked the PC version.

Not to mention the pretty much complete inability to mod it at all.  That and the lack of variety of enemies pretty much makes it so i won't buy another Gearbox game.  It was fun for a while, but i just expect more from PC.

Meh they are an average developer, and after the dark period and change in art style you should have expected a boring repeat affair.

Funny, Valve and Blizzard have had zero problems making money off the PC, even before Steam and WoW.

Also, piracy is a scapegoat for shitty developers. Then again, I haven't even haerd them bitching about any of this until they realeased that bucket of shit they called UT3. Only THEN it was all "OMG THE PIRACY!!!11" Coincidence? I think not. Make good games or gtfo and develop console games, but don't try to blame piracy on your own inability to make a worthwhile game. Even the guys who did Bad Company 2 admitted it's much easier to sell games to the console crowd since they have lower expectations. I'll grab the quote in a minute.

Edit: Here it is, the truth all comes out. It's not the piracy that's killing the PC after all.

The quote in question is the very first answer:

Gordon Van Dyke: It's not a shift in focus, but more like somewhere we wanted to explore. I think what happened was, consoles have reached a level where we could introduce people to something we had been giving to PC players for quite a while. It was an exciting opportunity. So we really focused on that. There are more expectations of us, for the PC game. It almost kind of makes you weary, you get nervous, you put these unrealistic expectations on yourself as a developer. You forget that the whole premise is to get something out there that's really fun. We realized that BC2 was going to provide that. We have a lot to live up to on the PC, and I think the original Bad Company's focus was to kind of...reintroduce Battlefield to a new audience on the console. BC2 is like, maybe in retrospect, we could have given BC1 to the PC but we didn't. We didn't feel like it was worth it to go back and try and do that, but we thought, "Well, let's give them BC2." It lived up to expectations, I think, what PC players were expecting. Especially for a new engine.

Basically, people on the consoles have far lesser expectations than the people who play on the PC so it's far easier to milk them out the ass with far less work.

lol two out of hundreds of developers, thats nice. You forget that Valve is making console games now and that Blizzard doesn't have a care in the world because of that cash cow called WOW. And UT3 shitty lol.  I had more fun in that game than I ever had in MW. Its not Epic's fault that people would rather steal the game than pay for it.  Are you implying that if UT3 was a "good game" people wouldn't steal it?

1) Read my edit.

2) UT3 is utter shit compared to previous UT games. It was consolified to shit basically.

3) Yes, if UT3 was a good game people wouldn't pirate it, stealing != piracy. In the past several eyars wehre "most pirated game of the year" stats have been kept, I dare you to show me a Blizzard or a Valve game.

4) I clearly stated that Valve was better before Steam or their multiplat games and Blizzard was also perfectly fine before WoW. So don't even bother. Epic was perfectly fine as well on the PC until tey started to release consolified games on the PC.

All in all, the reason their games don't sell is because they decide to ruin them by putting console mechanics, which are extremely primitive, in PC games. I mean, most of those mechanics haven't been used since the 80s back when Windows wasn't dominant and not everyone had a mouse.

oh those greedy bastards, making a console game so they can make more money. I exepect Obama to hold a press conference over this greed, and maybe a Senate hearing. How I would love to here Carl Levin rip EA a new one over this "shitty deal" for pc gamers.

Except that Dragon Age sold better on PC than on the consoles, if I am not mistaken. So no, you are just wrong.

lol so my post about PC guys being Spoiled Elitist that don't like good games was right? oh noes game is on consoles, wut do? Call it shit and not buy it. What ever; People like that are part of the reason devs have moved away from the pc crowd. I remember being on the Bethesda boards when Oblivion was in development. PC guys were crying because they were showing off the xbox version and not the PC version. Then they showed the PC version and they cried,"Console port confirmed why does Bethesda hate us so", because the font was to big. Just shut up and enjoy the games.

Actually being spoiled is the exact opposite of not liking good games.

I can also guarantee you that you can ask anyone who has played for a while and they will tell you that Oblivion is the worst Elder Scrolls game. Morrowind is still the best of the 4, and then Daggerfall. Oblivion is not a good game that can be "just enjoyed" considering its predecessor was clearly better.

so they failed to turn a profit on the console versions? I find that hard to believe. And what does dragon age have to do with anything? The qoute you used was about BFBC and not making a PC game.

Because Dragon Age for the PC was made properly for the PC and there wass very little dumbing down done to it, and it sold perfectly fine. The quote was not pertaining solely to BC, it pertains to all the developers who whine about why they don't make money on the PC. If they didn't release shit, they would. Instead of taking responsability of their own incompetance, they decide to use a scapegoat, and since so many people are uneducated about the REAL effects and causes of piracy, they can get away with it too.
