Whats the most important deciding factor when choosing a new game system?

New hardware 1 14.29%

New Software 6 85.71%

Total:7

Recently I was talking with someone about what sells a console the hardware alone or the software alone. I said I thought both contributed but some users believed software alone sells hardware while others believe hardware alone sells hardware. For me myself its a mixture of the two but if I had to choose one I would say hardware.

When I think about it, the dual touch screens sold me on a DS, the Wiimote sold me on the Wii and the BluRay drive is the only reason I bought the PS3. PSP was also a purchase for me based on graphics, MP3 capabilities and UMD. So hardware for me is the driving force behind most of my purchases.

Though I'll stress again software does effect my decision making it is not more important to me then hardware. Look at my Wii for example, the 3rd party software sucks but the Wiimote is so awsome and the peripherals and the VC and so fourth they make the console my console of choice. Sure NSMBW makes it all the more better.

But when I buy a new console it is not for the games.

When I bought the DS. Launch day their was no good software availible for months. I bought the hardware for the hardware.

When I bought the Wii the only launch title I purchased day one was LOZ:TP and I could have gotten that on my GameCube. Why did I purchase my Wii? The hardware I mean seriously their was no software.

So when you buy a new platform. What is more important to you, the hardware and new technology or the software?

Software. I don't give a fuck about hardware. Console makers have to make me want to buy another one of their stupid pieces of plastic shit with some hawt gamez.

Games. Plain and simple. The best hardware in the world doesn't mean a thing if there isn't something fun to play on it. Believe me. I know.

This thread marks the second time in a row that I was the third poster, directly behind Badgenome. That's freaky!

Lay off the PS3, dude, or I'll cut you.

Since when did I own a PS3?

You should really buy a PS3! Now that it's the same price as the 360, you will get a much more reliable console with virtually unlimited potential. Plus with free (and clearly better) online, the biggest first party (= more exclusive games), and Sony's track record of demolishing the competition (this is a long distance race, not a sprint; if you look at the trend of PS1 and PS2 sales, it's obvious that the PS3 will eventually sell >200 million), you really can't go wrong.

And it will eventually have some games, too!

Lol!  I assume some outsider will read this string of posts and have no idea what just happened here.

As an early adopter I can't really say software because when I buy the consoles the software just doesn't exist yet. The only two console's I can say that hardware wasn't a deciding factor in would be the purchases of my 360 and my NES. I bought the 360 for the 3rd party games and Halo which I couldn't get on my Wii and the NES for the Nintendo first party games I could no longer get on my Atari2600.

But my Wii , DS , PS3 and PSP were all purchased not for the software but the hardware. launch day their was nothing good for Wii and DS that wasn't already availible on a current console. Then my PS3 I purchased for BluRay and my PSP for MP3's UMD's and graphics.

All my other console purchases were made based on both hardware and software!
