A Sony spokesperson confirmed to IGN the company has now begun shipping new PlayStation 3 models to North America that include a 40nm RSX graphics chip.

The smaller chip allows the console to run cooler, consume less power, and, presumably, help Sony reduce manufacturing cost of the system. If you're on the lookout for the new unit, the model number is "CECH-2101A."

Sony's older PlayStation 3 models previously included 90mn and 65nm chip sizes. Last December, a report from research firm iSuppli noted Sony was close to breaking even with each PS3 sale. This new model may finally allow Sony to profit from its console.

Sony's annual fiscal results from his past week show the company has sold 35 million PlayStation 3 units since launch in 2006.

Well i think this explains why we had the "shortages".

That's good news... but I wonder, why only Sony does those things? Can't a Wii be "reduced" too to reduce some costs. Or the 360, etc?

Love how you bold the 'has sold' part. Another person pushing the sold vs ship argument. Well, skip it and just look at other threads already out there that discuss this to death.

Just to clarify before it becomes rampant... SOLD = SHIPPED TO RETAILERS

As for the main topic on the chip. Nice. Almost makes me wish I'd waited a couple months to buy my PS3. Ah well, it works well, just have to keep door to cabinet open while playing games.

serious question and kind of off-topic. Can I transfer all my PSN games over to my new PS3?

Im doing exactly the same. My phat PS3 will be soon 3yo so I want to get the new Slim.

You can transfer all you data through data transfer utility and ethernet cable. Even protected game saves get transferred

I will wait 2 mths and get the latest Slim.

360 chips have been reduced several times.

Ah, well you could have removed their anchors. I do when I copy an article. Eitherway, I mostly wanted to hopefully nip it in the bud before someone trolls on. I defer my comment to the original author then at IGN.
