Forums - Sony - So is sony happy with the PS3?

It isn't spin. A company like them, a multi-BILLION dollar company, can withstand the loss. I didn't say the loss was good, but it can be dealt with.

We're not talking about one period, Sony has quite some time losing money. How long could this multi-billion company withstand those losses?

Sony may be be multi-billion dollar company... but the PS3 already costed them multi-billion dollars losses!

Of course they're not happy with it... there's no spin to that! Let's be realistic guys. They're trying to save the brand, not the console.

So how will a price cut this holiday make this situation better?

For those trying to make light of this, the games division of Sony used to carry the company. It was their shining jewel. The PS3-era has completely wiped all of that out to where games (or whatever complex group of initiatives that its hidden in just like MS) is just another division that isn't pulling its weight.

So make light of this if it makes you feel better about the PS3, but if you really love Playstation you better hope that Sony has a long term plan to turn this around, because Move ain't it.

I don't think they are happy they have pretty much lose any money from the PS1 and PS2

It met projections but in a thread i read some sony guy thought the PS3 was offset.Sony is still losing 891 million. how are they still losing that much?  how much profit as a whole did sony make? Oh and do you think a pricecut will come this year to reach the 15 million projected?

sony aren't still losing they lost last year and that was for April 2009 to March 2010

AND it was because till September last year they were losing big on PS3 plus they had huge loses on warehousing the PS3 slim till PS3 fat soldout.

Plus they were still losing on PS3 slim but that was recouped by SW sales as we saw OCT-DEC quater made profit and JAN-MAR but loses in previous quater that year were too much to overhaul.

PS3 will only make a price cutif Arcade 360 SLIM at $149 has an impact and they will still profit at $249 as new RSX 40nm is making profit for PS3 now and CELL 32nm is coming plus other cost cuttings.

Sony made a $400-500m loses in all as a company last year and most was because of PS3

and please for god's sake stop making all you 2 liner posts with small small questions?

During the three month period Sony started making money on each console sold.

To be honest, 891 million to a company like Sony isn't as bad as it sounds, especially considering the PS3 hardware itself is apparently profiting at this point. Things are looking WAY up for Sony, and with the D-listing of the PS2 from NPD, I imagine all focus will now go to PSP and the PS3.

Are you kidding?  In this economy any company losing 891 million US dollars is bad.  Good spin though.

do you even understand what he is saying?

Sony made a loss but it has lowed from last year that means sony is making changes to bring profitability.

Q1 Profit / end of thread

We expect full profitability this year, what most people don't understand is that those losses came from the ps3 fat model and the slim design and release.

it's the future of handheld

Whats there to be happy about? The only reason why they are in this business is to make money and they have made considerable losses in both profit and market share. The latter can be used to justify making losses on the former however since both are bad theres very little bright side.

Tease.

I agree.

Basically I tend to think of it like this.

Say you have 2 kids... and they are brilliant Straight A's, both are going to be Doctors.

Then you have your third kid.  Your clearly going to think he's going to be smart too... but he isn't.  He ends up getting D's and F's on his report cards... and you get him some help etc... so now he's getting C+ and B-s.

He's not going to be a doctor and as "big" of a success as your other children... but your happy that atleast he's on his way to being Ok, and not living with you in the basement until he's 45.

But with a B he'd still be able to do charity work, volunteer in the 3rd world. He might even start a successful business or become a great football player that gives tons of money to orphans. He could become and artist or an actor that makes millions of dollars that he chose to spend on his ageing father and on research to improve the health care of the country. So now tell me, which kid is more successful? The two who spend a lifetime paying the bills from medical school, or the one helping the world become a better place? ;D

ermm no, those bills can be paid off pretty easily after around 4-5 years of practising as a doctor if you decide to make direct payments back, so not a "lifetime".

Yes SONY will probably not break even on it. But in terms of quality titles, sales  & so on sony should be extremely happy. Not to mention almost every profit they are making off blu-ray is due to the PS3!
