Forums - Sony - Sony: PlayStation Newtork still not making profit

We could see Sony doing away with the multi system sharing feature.

While I don't want that to happen. Sony may look into it. 3rd parties are. Look at Capcom.

I don't want companies charging people extra just because they bought a game used at Gamestop or other places that sell used games. One reason, that will start hurting several stores and then we will start losing those stores and be left with Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy being the only options and that lowers competiton and soon prices will really start to jump up.

I can't see many people buying a PSN Premium package though if they keep online multiplayer for free (which they've said they will). The reason IMO, why Live does so well is because they charge to play online. Do you really think people would pay for Live if multiplayer was free?

Sure, but Live is only doing so well because of the 360's success.  Also adding to Live's success is that the 360 is mainly a product in North America, basically the area with the most disposable income, so they choose the fattest market while Sony/Ninty are content to get other areas as well

ROFL, I love the whole

True Sony is "struggling" with the US mainly, while it dominates Japan and recently took Europe, so perhaps your comment may have some strength there especially on the "content" part, but to throw in "NINTY" ?!?!?!? ROFL, NINTY is DOMINATING, DESTROYING the 360 in the 360's OWN region AND EVERYWHERE ELSE! So seriously Ninty is definitely not content with the other areas because they dominate ALL areas. I assume the 360 was your purchase of choice, while the PS3 was my purchase and I got my 10 year old nephew his Wii, but please try not to be blinded by senseless fanboyism.

Make games, not war (that goes for ridiculous fanboys)

I may be the next Maelstorm or not, you be the judge http://videogamesgrow.blogspot.com/  hopefully I can be more of an asset than a fanboy to VGC hehe.

Don't worry about them, the more PS3s and PSP (Gos) that are sold the more they make on PSN.. so eventually they will profit

This is the worst argument that i've seen lately and I need to set this straight.

-Ninty vs MS in America-- we were talking about the success of ONLINE services alright, not total HW sales and so I made a statement about why the XBL has excelled itself.  If you want to cherry pick people's arguments then that's  fantastic, but try to understand the total message and you'd be thought of as more thoughtful and reasoned in the process.  Again, we were talking about ONLINE services, and why MS is winning that part of the war.  I could throw at you the totally obvious statement that MS has focused on online gaming to a greater degree than the other two, but I also like to not be Capt. Obvious all the time and to point out contributing rather than main factors.

-Sony/Ninty -- The point was to talk about how MS prefers to concentrate in north america, and that it is a richer market, and therefore will havea higher percentage of its users using the networked services than Sony or Nintendo.

That's all, I shouldnt have to explain myself and I've got a degree in finance (working on an MBA plus experience with marketing which is the big umbrella that any website devoted to sales will fall under) and I know what I'm talking about.  There is no way in heck that you can label me as ignorant when you are the one that just doesn't get the point or even the implications of my statements.

Not really.  The costs of upkeep will just keep rising.  They haven't made a profit yet even after the store has been up and people have been buying lots of stuff already.  That isn't going to change.  People will maintain their spending habbits.

The only thing now that will make PSN profitable is the premium service charge coming soon.

10 or 20 per year is fine with me if they did decide to start charging. But Microsofts 50 per year just isn't worth it.

The surveys they did so far had like a minimum of $70-80 per year for the Sony premium service options...

I disagree, kinda.  I mean the premium service charge will definitely help, but what will also help is making the PSN bigger by selling more games, getting more people on home etc.   I know that the PSP2 phone thing is just considered a rumor at this point, but if true, it could be a big game changer for Sony and the PSN in particular.  I think that it will be a big success b/c it costs very little additionally to make a smart phone a portable gaming device.   And, we've seen the success of gaming on the Iphone so marketing games on phones is for real.  But, sony has a big advantage over the Iphone, in that it owns companies that develops games, so it gets a bigger share of the profit than apple will, and have more resources for producing games than Apple.

Supercat, the premium service will be the answer, the psp2 may be a big deal but with the recent go debacle, I doubt there will be many lining up to buy this one unless it gets alot of things right which is always a toss up concerning new hardware iterations as far as sony is concerned (talkin about the psp). The premium service, however, will include features that most online gamers will want to pay for, and even if only an eighth of the psn userbase decides to upgrade to premium, then they will have made more money than it costs to implement such features which of course would include cross game chat among other things.
