After years of making a loss on each console sold, the PlayStation 3 is now making Sony money

According to a report by Reuters Japan (thanks andriasang) the end of March was the turning point. The PS3 has gone through various manufacturing changes designed to cut costs since launch.

Sony presented its annual financial results in an investor call today, adding that "despite PS3 hardware cost reductions and increased unit sales of PS3 software, profitability deteriorated primarily due to lower unit sales of PS2 software and of PSP hardware."

Sony sold 13 million PS3s in fiscal 20t09, 3 million more than the previous year.

Yeah we knew about this already though

There also NOT making profit on PSN: "We are building the PSN platform and revenue is increasing. For the past fiscal year our target was to do about ¥50 billion worth of sales over PSN and we were slightly behind that schedule. In terms of profitability on the network side I think we need to do a little bit more or better to become profitable here"

But they are making profit now from the PS3 system, PSN and other segments are different matter probly why they have PSN premium service planned.

Where does it say that the PS3 hardware is profitable? I fail to see it.
