I just can't see where Sony is getting 15 million PS3s from. That's 2 million more than last year which saw a $100 price drop and exclusives like Uncharted 2, God of War III, and Final Fantasy XIII in Japan.

Even with Gran Turismo 5, LittleBigPlanet 2, and probably Killzone 3, I don't see how Sony could possibly ship 15 million PS3s without a substantial price drop. Unless of course they are vastly overestimating the potential of PlayStation Move.

One word:

$200

That would definitely do it.

I think continued momentum from the drop to $299 will help a long way towards getting there, then a drop to $249 in anticipation of Move plus the release of GT5 will help cover what they have left over.

Remember, the ps3 was doing pretty poorly last year at $399, and it is doing remarkably better over the start of this year.  The ps3 has thus far sold 3.6 million units this year, compared to 2.6 million units over the same period last year.  That's a 38% increase.  Assuming that holds true through the end of August (release of Slim last year), that would see the ps3's sales increase from 4.22 million last year to 5.82 million, well before the holidays have even begun.

Toss in a small price cut and GT5, and you'll probably see similar holiday sales to last year, followed by a weaker first quarter due to a lack of anything on par with God of War and Final Fantasy.  Given all this, I could see them landing around 15 million total  - 15 million sold, but that'll translate into shipped.

Edited to correct my numbers.

is not 2 million ps3's hanging around with shortages in us confirmed too many for this time of year?? i expect adjustments:):)
if no adjustments are made then i will not complain, as the staff do the best they can:):)

You had similar expectations 3 months ago and it didn't happen then either. The problem back then was that all Vgchartz numbers for the big countries were very much in line with numbers we got from sources like Gfk and NPD.

Last year sold 13m with half the year at $399, so I'd assume a full year at $299 should be set for 15 million as a small increase. Only problem could be if the 'spike' immediately after the price cut is too much for consistent sales throughout the year to overcome.

We've still got to see what they've got for us at E3 I guess, as chances are the 'price cut' could just be a clever rebundling with Move but still priced at $299.

I dont think they can afford a price cut of either $50 or $100 in this year.

Can someone tell me what they did the last several years? (is their loss in this division lower than previous years?)

GT5 will get them that 15M. I doubt there'll be a price cut maybe a $50 cut this fall but even thats unlikely.

GT5 will not sell millions of PS3s. So either Sony has very high expectations for Move or they're planning a price cut.

yes but this time it's different with what laffiel siad apparently vgchartz have 1m ps3's in stock, so there you go that leaves 1 million ps3's unaccounted for which was my original statement 3 months ago, that's so weird

anyho it's just a view, so please take no offense:):)

Maybe slightly undertracked, but I think 2 mil in the channel is around normal numbers. Here's hoping Sony can reach their 15 mil prediction. But, if they can get GT5 out (as well as pumping out more of their incredible exclusives) this FY, I can definitely see it happening.

hmm.. the other consoles have about 1mln units in stock according to VGC and PS3 had some serious supply issues, so I expect to see adjustments soon

That's right.  I completely forgot about the supply issues in US for a second there.  Yea, there may be adjustments if the other consoles have around 1 mil in stock at the end of March.  Probably should have checked those numbers, first.

I don't expect a price cut but I do expect some fairly beefy bundles.
