‘Pre-owned a bigger problem than piracy’

by Rob Crossley

Blitz Games Studios’ co-founder Andrew Oliver says second-hand games can effectively quarter owed royalty pay

As EA is set to implement a divisive $10 pay-wall in a bid to curb pre-owned sales of its games, one experienced UK developer believes the threat of second-hand sales must be addressed.

In fact, Blitz Games Studios co-founder Andrew Oliver believes that piracy is not the biggest problem facing the game industry, but instead one part of a bigger, underlying issue; lost revenues.

“Arguably the bigger problem on consoles now is the trading in of games,” he tells Develop.

“I understand why players do this, games are expensive and after a few weeks of playing you’ve either beaten it, or got bored of it so trading it back in to help pay for the next seems sensible when people are short of cash.”

However, citing figures suggesting that games are traded in as many as four times, he says that – if true – this means that publisher and developer royalties are effectively quartered.

“So while retail may be announcing a reasonable season, the money going back up the chain is a fraction of what it was only a few years ago.  This is a much bigger problem than piracy on the main consoles,” he added.

Oliver adds that the damage done by the pre-owned business will push publishers towards “digital downloads, either the full game, or downloadable content releases.”

Today EA revealed it is introducing a $10 pay-wall scheme that will see its line of sports games come bundled with a free pass card for online services – permitting access to online games, downloadable content and other online bonuses.

The pass card will work much like a Microsoft Points card, with users having to input a code to get online access. Once the code is used, the player’s online account is activated and the pass card becomes useless.

It means that, in theory, all pre-owned EA Sports games found at the retailers won’t be offering free online access. Those who buy EA Sports games pre-owned can still get online access, but will have to pay $10 for one.

Honestly, I have always seen used game sales as bad as pirates. I never understod how someone go whine about piracy and then just go and  deprive a developer of the same amount of money by selling his game. Both types to me are almost equally bad, though at least pirates have some excuses other than "i want money."

Edit: There seems to be some script in there that I cannot see when I try to edit this article, sorry.

I love this, i really hope that these publishers find a way to permanently kill off used game sales and when all the game stores go out of business and then new sales plummet because its almost impossible to locate new games, i will be the first to point and laugh at the publishers stupidity

I love how the only developers who bitch about used game sales are those who lack the talent to make a game that is enjoyable for long periods of time. Of course, if you make a short, shitty game, people will sell it.

Isn't that the exact same case with Piracy? When have you seen Sid Meier, Will Wright, Blizzard, Valve, etc. bitch about piracy? In fact they have said that piracy is not a problem.

There are probably lots of people who buy used games and also get the dlc for that game. Doesnt that dlc money go to the developer?

I think the main reason valve and Blizzard don't bitch about piracy is that they are relatively unaffected by it. Steam can be hacked for single player I believe, but you can't play online. WoW is probably one of the most pirated games in the world, but Blizzard don't care about the pocket change they get from the sales of the game and expansions. Pay to play is where the money is at. Starcraft II multiplayer seems likely to be unplayable without a legit version.

But that doesn't change the fact that you may have a point - good developers will have more loyal fans, and be able to convince people that it is worth paying for their game

This is bullshit. Being able to trade in a game actually allows me to buy more games in the long run. If I had to pay $60 every damn time knowing that once I buy this game I can't get some sort of value for it later on if I get tired of it would disuade me from buying any game unless it was a huge AAA game. I'm already almost at that breaking point because $60 is a lot but I do take chances because I have the choice of trade ins.

I just realized, I'm going to be the biggest hypocrite in the world in a few years when I'm working on some game somewhere for some studio after I graduate.

Do you at least get a free copy of the game you were working on :P

Granted I don't buy many used games (or new for that matter), I frequently rent games so I don't really like the idea of stuff like this. Maybe people are also getting bored with the copy paste last year's sports game and charge full price strategy.

Used games hurt the crappy games more. I don't see Nintendo games suffering from this.
Man up and make your games worth keeping so you won't have problem people selling them.
