I wouldn't count it as a failure for Sony. If they would have skipped this gen, MS would have won the whole HD market and it would have been WAY harder for them to enter the next gen race.
Financially, we can't say yet. Sure, they lost a HUGE amount of money, but if they continue their business like now, they might break even again or make some small earnings. You have to consider that they continue to sell the PS3, even after they brought out their next console. I doubt they will make the big buck with the PS3 again, though.
But like TheNoobHolocaust already said,(cool name by the way) for gamers the PS3 is a true blessing.
