Forums - Sales - EA making twice as much money from mobile as from PlayStation 3

i found the following news:

EA making twice as much money from mobile as from PlayStation 3
And mobile is also outstripping PSP

The console industry doesn't always treat mobile with the respect that we'd (obviously) say it's due. Yet the latest set of financial figures from Electronic Arts could change that.

In the third quarter of 2007, EA made a whopping great $640 million (£311m) in revenues from all its gaming platforms. But it's the breakdown that's interesting.

Xbox 360 was the publisher's biggest cash cow with $218 million (£106m), followed by PlayStation 2 ($73m/£35m), Wii ($59m/£29m), and DS ($47m/£23m). But next comes mobile with $37 million (£18m), ahead of PSP ($21m/£10m) and PS3 ($17m/£8m).

That's right. Just to restate the point, EA made more than double the revenues from mobile games than it did from PlayStation 3 in the third quarter this year. The info is here if you don't believe us.

And that's before you think of the cheaper costs of developing those mobile games, compared to the PS3 titles.

Obviously, PS3 sales will increase as people finally start buying the console, but we still think it's an important stat that highlights the growth and importance of mobile gaming. As a bonus, it should hopefully stop any more mobile operator bigwigs claiming mobile games are a niche.

The downside, mind, is that EA's mobile revenues in the third quarter of 2006 were $35 million, so they've only grown by 5.7 per cent in the last year, compared to rivals Gameloft (51 per cent) and Glu (34.9 per cent).

XD awesome :) hell I hope it does horridly on the PS3. If they don't stop making garbage ports I know for a fact I wont be buying anything from them >_>, if they don't work out orange  box I'm not buying that either. People need to stop buying garbage, PS3 fans seem to be enjoying COD4, Oblivion, and Assassins creed a decent ammount :P EA needs to "get into the game" a bit harder I'd say before any of their material is worth my purchase.

From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.

@ChronotriggerJM

another website wrote they think they make so less money on PS3 because the PS3 market is too small to gain money

THey should take notice and stop releasing direct ports from the 360 .

Well as much as I'd like to say its a bit of both, good games seem to be doing fine on the PS3, like I said COD4's sales aren't bad by any means, neither are Assassins creed I believe. If the game is worth buying I know I'll pick it up. And I believe many would :P

Install base. Mobile has a much larger install base than PS3. However, why so little on the PSP? You would think it was be higher than mobile.

Man Mobile sucks, well the games at least

I have no desire to buy any EA game ever again until they can prove that they can make a quality game and not some botched/rushed half assed attempt at a game like Madden 08 and NCAA 08 were.

All versions on the new consoles stunk badly and were no fun.

Get your Portable ID!

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

This is surprising to anyone? Not me, have you any idea hwo many mobiles are out there?! Billions is how many, and here in Norway an ordinary mobile (cellphone) game costs about 7-8$. Do the math. I'm surprised EA don't make tripple compared to PS3!
But seriously, how much lower does it get than playing EA games on a frickin cellphone? Blarrgghh... I have to go rinse of now...
