Forums - General - Android 2.2 provides massive performance boost over 2.1

http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/05/11/exclusive-androidpolice-coms-nexus-one-is-running-android-2-2-froyo-how-fast-is-it-compared-to-2-1-oh-only-about-450-faster/

...

Linpack for Android was specifically created to test the performance of Dalvik VM which, in short, is the heart and the brains of Android.

...

Just so you have an idea of the kind of scores you can expect from the benchmark, let me list a few sample numbers:

  • the Nexus One running Android 2.1 gets about 6.5-7 MFLOPS
  • my HTC Hero averages a measly score of about 2 MFLOPS (the phone is pretty slow indeed)

...

So how does the Nexus One with Froyo do?

A whopping 37.5 MFLOPS.

Think about this for a second. 37.6, compared to 6.5-7 – that’s about a 450% speed improvement.

Conclusion

Things are starting to finally come together. Flash and huge performance gains, all in the same release. Flash is CPU hungry, so Android makes everything about the environment more efficient.

Do you see it? Adobe wasn’t giving Apple what they needed, and Apple wasn’t giving Adobe, well, anything.

But Google thought of the problem outside the box, like the ingenious engineers to the core that they are and made Android so much faster than it could finally run full Flash without a hitch.

Oh yeah, the phone is indeed noticeably faster.

O_O

450%?!

I know it's not going to be 450% for everything, but daaaaamn...

Talk about making room for Flash...

It seems Google is making an official reveal here the 18th-19th, so it can't be that far off. Not that I have any idea when the Evo 4 releases, but still.

Evo 4 hasn't had a date yet.. but it is expected very soon.. Early June-ish.. at least, in the USA. I'm not sure when its getting a European release.

The Sprint Rep at the store I bought my HTC Hero believe the Evo will drop on June 18th, so not to far off.

Also, does anyone know if this OS version 2.2 is going to be available for the US version of the HTC hero?

I haven't heard anything about any plans for upgrading older phones to 2.2 at the moment, but it hasn't even been officially presented yet. I don't know if it's gonna happen from HTC though, they don't seem to be the best at getting Android updated on their old phones. You could do it yourself though.

@Vetterman -

Given that the Hero hasn't even got 2.1 yet, I'd imagine that 2.2 is far off.

The real question/problem with 2.2 is how many handsets that are currently out will support 2.2. I'd venture to say 'not many' unless they are part of the 2nd gen of Android phones (Nexus One and better)

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
