Forums - Sales - Halo 3 launch sales vs MGS4 launch sales

Kasz: You don't think any game can beat it? I think that GTA4 can and will. It will have more than twice that big userbase, it's extremly popular and in past years sold extremly well.
Also Final Fantasy would have a chance if it was released simultaneosly in all regions. Games from FF series sell extremly well on its first week in Japan (numbers like 2 million). But it probably will be released first in Japan.

I will admit that I haven't been a fan of the MGS series and haven't even bought a single one of the games in it. However, after seeing the play thru that Kojima did in Japan, I know that I will be buying this game. Do I think it will do Halo 3 numbers? My honest answer to that is HEEEELLLLL NO. The only way it could is if they make it into possibly the best game ever made and people are going nuts just to get the game.

GT5 though, in the long run it could beat Halo 3 numbers, but it will be close. With a title like GT, it usually has very long legs and sells very well all over the world as it's arguably the best racing sim ever made.

But I do know that GTA4 will beat Halo 3 numbers. The hype for this game makes Halo 3 look like it didn't even get a single ad.

Oh, but I will make this prediction.. MGS4 and GT5 will outsell Halo 3..... in Japan.

What the hell?

Sony fans implyed no such thing. Sony fans are claiming that MGS4 will help the hardware to start improving and going forward. Sony fans NEVER EVER claimed that MGS4 is going to break any sales records like Halo 3 did.

Blatant flame war, trolling, and lying pisses me off totally. WOW @ Vgchartz allowing this crap. A mod will need to take a stand sooner or later because this sort of crap is really getting out of hand on this forum.

- it depends WHEN the game is released (Xmas ? not Xmas ?)
- it depends how high are the review score
(Halo3 was overhyped like AssassinCreed is)

Overall, about sales

Halo3 >> MGS4
Halo3 > or = GT5

Note : I expect MGS4 and GT5 to MOVE a lot more of system than Halo3 but to have less software sales.

*laughs* Halo is nothing compared to GT. The original GT sold over 10 million, compared to Halo selling 5-6. GT3 sold over 14 million compared to Halo 2 selling 8. Only the likes of GTA and The Sims can rival GT. Also MGS outsold Halo, and MGS2+Substance outsold Halo 2.

Well Metal Gear Solid 3 launched at 221,024 units on week 1 of its release and 2 weeks before that, halo 2 launched at 2.6 million units.

Metal Gear Solid is nowhere near as big of a franchise as Internet fans seem to assume. Much like God of War or Metroid Prime, these series get critical acclaim but don't appeal to the mass market. Metal Gear Solid 4 will probably do around 2-3 million sales lifetime; a very strong title, just not even remotely close to Halo numbers.

I think you're underestimating MGS.  It's actually on par with Halo if not bigger -

MGS (PSX) - 6 million +

 Halo - 5 million +

MGS2 - 7 million + (8 million + including Substance)

 Halo 2 - 8 million +

MGS3 I think should be compared to Halo wars, since it's a prequel.

MGS4 vs. Halo 3 is on.

MGS isn't as popular as it used to - MGS3: Snake Eater did about 3 million, Halo 3 did 3 million in one week.

If your gonna add substance sales from the xbox you should also add all the Halo Pc game sales. And remember, Halo CE was a launch title with very little promotion in it. Microsoft actually had their marketing machine bet on Oddworld Munch's Oddysey at the time. The Halo community developed largely by word of mouth and was underground for the most part until Halo 2. Halo was a hit, not by fancy marketing but by the gamers. Similar to many blizzard games. And you cant buy marketing like that.

I don't think MGS 4 will beat Halo 3, not at launch and probably not in lifetime sales. It's just not mandatory like Halo is; if you own a 360, you must own Halo, it's that simple really.

Snake Eater sold 5 million. including Subsistence. And launch sales mean very little in the long run. Halo is not as big as you think it is.
