Forums - Gaming - PC Dreamcast emulator + Nvidia 3D vision = DC games in perfect 1080p 3D

Holy SH**!

I just played Sonic Adventure 2 and Ikaruga on my PC using NullDC emulator. Emulation is 99% perfect (few small sound hickups).

This alone is pretty badass news...but the cool thing is that I did this with its Nvidia 3D driver which makes all Dreamcast games appear 3D using Nvidia 3D vision.

The driver is excellent and the quality of the 3D was quite amazing. Especially sweet is that since its emulation, games run in whatever resolution you want them to run (1080p for me).

You need a beefy PC to do it in 3D but the emulator on its own doesn't require much. All I can say is god bless homebrew!

You can add another bulletin point to Sega Dreamcast...First console with games that you can play in HD 3D! :)

*Edit

For those interested you can read up on the emulator here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NullDC

As I have an extensive collection of Dreamcast games I decided to post which games are working well, which are working so-so and which are not working. The ones with (3D) next to them look amazing in 3D.

1. Games that emulate perfect or almost perfect

Dead or alive 2 (3D), GuiltyGearX, Headhunter (3D), Ikaruga (3D), Marvel vs Capcom 2, Psyvariar2, Quake3 (3D), SNK vs CAPCOM2, Soul Calibur (3D),  Street Fighter 3: 3rd strike, ToySoldiers (3D!!!! - looks faakin amazing but CD music doesnt work), Virtua Fighter 3 (3D), Sonic Adventur 2 (3D), Unreal Tournamnet (3D)

2. Games with graphical issues that are still playable

Alien Front Online, LegacyofKain:Soul Reaver, SFRush2049, Tony Hawk Skater 2

3. Not playable/Wont boot

Fatal Fury:MArk of the Wolves, Propeller Arena, Cannon Spike, Demolition Racer, Street Fighter Alpha 3

Ill update the list as I test more games.

Screw 3D; HD Shenmue please lol

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

That's awesome but what is your definition of "99% perfect 3D"? One bottom layer with the background and one layer with the characters and mobs on top = 3-D?

Well the below video shows the Sonic 2 emulation. There are few minor sound glitches and hickups but graphics are perfect.

You need the glasses and appropriate TV to see it in 3D but the quality and depth I am getting is on par with 3D of current gen games like REsident Evil 5 and Metro 2033 running in 3D. So we're talking really good... PS3 will be golden if it can achieve this kind of 3D effects.

Sounds awesome.

Tried out any PS1 or PS2 emulated stuff? Id be very curious how that runs.

As for the PS3 doing 3D in the same way, I fear it will not (note: did not say cannot). Its their damn pride and "Need HD per eye" that disallows checkerboarding.

The n64 emulator is said to work so so in 3D...but none of the other 3D console emulators work well enough on their own let alone in 3D. No one has bothered developing 3D drivers for any other emulator as far as I know.

As far as PS3, I've overheard some things which make me believe that it may support various forms of 3D including checkerboard(for gaming). Apparently the update that PS3 recently had to support 3D is nothing more than software which lets PS3 tell the TV which format the game is using. Basically its just a software the functionality of HDMI 1.4 since HDMI 1.4 tells that to a TV automatically...

The 3D drivers still have to come from the developers of the game, and they may decide to include all kinds of 3D formats. The checkerboard TV's/projectors are not HDMI 1.4 so users will have to manually select "checkerboard" from the games options menu, but there is a good chance Wipeut, motostorm 2...etc... devs may decide to include drivers for every 3D format available...just like Avatar did.

How come the games are in 3D?

Being 3D doesn't depend on the actual game? Like, it has to be programed for it, hacing two distinct views.

Are you saying that any game you play, now can be 3D thanks to that Nvidia driver? What about mario bros? Can you run a NES emulator and play it in 3D?

A lot of Dreamcast games are already programmed in 3D (polygons). Therefore these games can be translated in to stereoscopic 3D effects with ease. All it takes is a 3D driver which syncs with the video card/glasses and renders 2 frames, giving the perception of depth. This emulator had a driver like this...and a pretty good one at that. Any 3d polygon based games for the dreamcast can have quality 3D effects enabled thanks to this driver/emulator. 2D games can have some cool layering but no pop out effects.

NES games can not be played in 3D so far as there are no 3D drivers for them. The NES games are purely sprite based so the best one could do with the is make the mario sprite stick out slightly off the 2D background. There would be non pop out effects...

Man that's sick.

Can you run a dolphin emulator to check Wii in 3D?

Nice to see some more people here interested in 3D! What kind of system are you running the emulator at? And is enabling the 3D only heavy on the videocard or does the cpu take a hit aswell?
