Additionally, while the US is more homophobic then most other countries (to my knowledge haven't looked at numbers)... we are actually LESS racist then most countries by the numbers.

It just occasionally appears differently due to the nature of our freedom of speech and our belief that stricter hate crime laws would infringe on it.

So I could see how this would appear to be different to an outsider.

Though I WILL say. I'm not surprised in either a Gay man being 2nd in American Idol or a Black Man being President.

We have gay senators, gay lawyers, gay judges... gay people everywhere. Outside of a few bigoted bosses who may fire gay people for being gay. Not to mention, singing is seen as well... a "gay" act.

Most homophobic people's reaction to a gay singer would likely be "Yeah no, duh." just like how they would re act to a gay ice singer.

When Ricky Martin came out as gay, it was largely treated as a "Yeah like we didn't already know that" moment.  Being gay may have actually HELPED.


While, Obama... the number of people actually racist (and homophobic) are actually VERY low beyond minor biases that can be overcome fairly easily. Most peoples racism is restricted to being slightly more nervous when a black guy walks by the a white guy.

A Harvard educated, suit wearing everyman isn't exactly going to worry them. Additionally, give a racist person the ability to vote for a Black man of their party, or a white man of the opposite party. I'll bet they take the black man every time! They'll just bitch that because of such and such they needed a black candidate.

Oh, homophobia is definitely worse. There are quite a few people who don't like one or the other, but you see far less outward bashing of black people. Furthermore, black people have full rights to every legal aspect, and federal protection from hate crimes. Whereas being gay bars you from certain things, and even a few areas (like Maine) specifically exclude homosexuality from being considered a hate crime.

well there have been gay presidents before...obama is just like those cases. people just didnt realize he was black.

anyways, i selected gays. i think views agaisnt gays are probably a lot more commonplace. imagine if the westboro baptist church started protesting just black peoples funerals with signs like "god hates ni**ers" it would get much more attention than protesting soldiers funerals with their fag signs.

Another example is how he blocked out one word but not the other.  

i did that actually because it has more common uses.  example being british slang for cigarette.  

they actually had the prom.  they let her and some special students attend...then went and had their own secret one with everyone else.

Gay people obviously. The US is a long long way away from ever giving a gay guy a chance at the presidency. Nigger is more of a comedic word than an insult in modern society, where as gay and queer are still considered insults. People would be horrified if you called someone a nigger in a non ironic way, but you can easily get away with something some one is a queer or something is gay. Gay people don't even have equal rights in the US. It is not socially acceptable to discriminate against black people, it's still socially acceptable to say you think being gay is wrong and all gay people should just be straight. It's changing though, which is good.
