I found a very interesting information in the financial results of Activision Blizzard.

Here are the installed bases for NA and Europe:

Xbox 360 12/31/09: 32M Estimated 12/21/10 installed base: 40M
PS3: 23M / 32M
Wii: 51M / 63M
Handhelds 112M / 130M

Quite a difference to VGC. Their source is: NPD, Charttrack and GFK

These numbers really aren't that different from Vgchartz. Take other other and Australia out of others and all home consoles are 2-3 million units higher than those numbers. That difference can easily be explained by some areas (like South America) that aren't in Activisions numbers.

also interesting is their prediction for 2010 :

PS3 selling 9M
Xbox360 selling 8M

.... unexpected from me

a bit low... adding japan and rest of the world it sounds like 9m for 360 and 12 for PS3

I know these numbers. Just on the first sight they look like they would be different.
Calculate Japan and Others/others in and you see they are pretty similar

If Activision would be right with their estimated numbers.

Then it would eventually look something like this worldwide on 1 January 2011:


NA/EU: 40 Million 360
NA/EU: 32 Million PS3

And probably:

Japan 1.5 Million 360
Japan 6 Million PS3


Australia and Rest:

4.25 Million 360
4 Million PS3

Total:

45.75 Million Xbox360
42.00 Million PS3


Looks like a reasonable number to me.
