Sounds pretty reasonable, but do they imagine everybody will politely not pirate the game for 18-24 months?

They're still putting themselves and their legitimate customers through hassle for no real payoff to anybody.

After 2 years probably no one is buying the game anymore and keeping the validation servers running forever is a bit costly and useless.

As long as it's not overly intrusive after the first activation, fine! Whatever. I will run with it.

My point is that their DRM is going to be just as effective at deterring piracy on launch day as it will be the day that they turn it off: Not at all.

It's nice that they're lowering the extra costs that legitimate customers have to pay in this system, but they're still going through a big song and dance that will accomplish nothing productive and cost Sega and their customers who knows how much money.

Alpha Protocol will still be bought years from now, just like any other PC game (especially since it's from a well-kown PC developer, and the game will probably be good). Either way, the faster they remove the validation, the better.

Uniloc's soft anchor is fairly new and obscure. When Football Manager 2009 came out the crack didn't come until months afterward.

I should know, I tried to pirate the game and failed. :P

Yeah but 99% of Sales happen in the first two years.
