Forums - General - Living in Greece has become incredibly tough right now... :-(

Hello all,

I'm sure most of you must've already heard about matters in Greece right now, it's very bad... In just a couple of months, VAT has 4% up, gas 10% up, wages are being cut left and right, even the lowest wage dropped to 500 fuc**** Euros! To make things worse, many are taking advantage of the situation, further increasing prices, laying off stuff, the consumers are being very reluctant to spend on anything...

The people in Athens and Thessaloniki are rioting, and with a God damn good reason! Most people in Greece are kind and hard working. For the last 100 years, we've been governed by the same completely useless politicians. It's due to their incompetence that we have to keep up with all this! We've been recieving tremendous help from the EU to no avail at all! Corruption is everywhere! From the last mayor, to the prime minister himself!

Also, we've been leaking money left and right for many years, and noone lifted a damn finger! We are 10 million people, and we have 8x public service employees more than UK!!! Many public works like roads, factories, bridges, etc take millions of millions from the government and never get actually made, or cost significantly less.

On the other hand, hard working people are trying to cope up with increasing costs everywhere, while watching their petty wages shrink. Papandreou (our prime minister) says there was no other way out of this mess, but is really true? I'm not expert on either politics or economics, please help me out:

Turkey had similar issues before, and managed to come out of it by reducing VAT, offering motives for companies to invest, etc. Why couldn't we have done the same? Also, we've been running deficits for ages now, why things are so bad now, all of a sudden? And, if anyone knows, WTH are these SPREADS I keep hearing about?

I am really sad, and I really see things getting even worse in the future. I wish all you people are with us Greeks

So, apparently noone cares about a whole country going bankrupt, 3 people killed in riots, Euro jeoperdy?

I'm sorry for how you guys are doing. It's tough here in America too, but it's definitely not that bad.

Ehh, if it makes you feel any better, most of the 20th century powers are in crisis.

I would post something more than this, but what I have to say would probably come off as very cold... so, I'm not going to. (Unless you really want me to ).

Bad news indeed, I actually heard some of the rioters blaming Obama (which I guess means the US) for devaluing the Euro to boost the Dollar. Sure hasn't worked. People are pissed, and they should be too. I'm sorry to hear about the problems there.

Clegg lol.

OT: Sorry to hear it. Hopefully, Greece's economy will recover soon. But these things take time, so be patient and stay safe.

Go ahead. I'm not wearing earplugs and as I've already stated, i'm no expert in economics. Could someone with some knowledge on the subject enlighten me, why is it so bad to default? Could there have been another way, other than resorting to the IMF for help? Why are things so bad now, we've been running deficits for decades now.

Sorry to hear that, times are rough all around but it seems like Greece is getting the worst. Hope you guys pull through and that things get better soon

Also, be safe and careful, and if the police declare a curfew, be smart and obey it. Nobody wants to hear about you getting hurt.
