Forums - Nintendo - Piracy is the real reason why core games on Wii don't sell as well?

I don't pirate but I can't afford every game new. I often wait for a price cut. Red Steel 2 and NHM2 will eventually be owned by me but first I want SMG2 and Metroid other M. I am considering monster hunter tri on he grounds that some friends are getting it. If they do I might get it much sooner. really, I just don't want a lot of "core" third party wii games at 50 dollars. I would be more inclined to believe that the core third party games have sluggish sales due to "purchase rationing" the core gamerrs that stuck with the wii as their primary console might have loyalty to Nintendo, and be more likey to save money for a nintendo purchase than buy a third party they have less history with.

The Xbox 360 was released 18 months ahead of the PS3, was leading the PS3 for the vast majority of the time and has around equal software sales? That doesn't make sense, especially when considering the sales curves: http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii®1=------&cons2=PS3®2=Europe&cons3=X360®3=Europe&start=39173&end=39810&weekly=1

The hardware sales are almost equal, the games are similar, and the target audience is similar, so why wouldn't the software sales be similar?  I also discounted the first year of software sales for the 360 to account for the head start.  I am assuming that any difference would be due to piracy.

And what is your chart trying to show?  You are showing Europe when I was talking about the Others region, and you are looking at one year, when I was looking at lifetime sales.

Because the most important metric is average time of ownership. Look at the current weekly software sales between Xbox 360 and PS3 in Others and look at the average age of ownership for both consoles which can be seen from the graph I showed to have a completely different value.

@Slimebeast, sorry I won't due to moderation concerns.

Tease.

I read the OP and was confused. Sure its easy to hack but what does hardcore gamers have to do with that. You talked about why Hardcore gamers don't buy the software on Wii but failed to truly link that to piracy. I think Piracy does diminish sales of software of 200,000-500,000 copies which is a lot. However I think that alot of the sales of Nintendo first party titles prove that their is a market for quality software and that Piracy is not mainstream enough amongst Nintendo's consumers.

That being said its true their are alot of pirates out their. However I don't think that it is the reason core games don't sell on Wii. You look at a pirate riddled console like the PSP where software usually doesn't sell all that well. Most games not even breaking 200,000 copies. Even first party software fails to sell truly well. Yet on the Wii first party software often even breaks the two million mark.

Yes as I estimated based on my own calculations that their is probubly up to 500,000 pirated copies of big games. Example I'd bet that over 500,000 people downloaded pirated copies of NSMBW. That being said I think their is more then enough legit gamers out their who do not pirate for core software to still sell.

Another debate about piracy ?

I dont pirate, but i dont buy any more Wii game...

The last one I got was Little King's Story (huge game) at full price and then Dead Space at discount price... months and months ago !

But i'm sure it's a combination of : gamers moving to HD Systems, piracy and not so many interesting games anymore (more of the same)...

Try Rage Of Bahamut ! Free trading card and RPG game on ITunes / Android. Use Code : Laa49998

And get free  rare card.  Enjoy !

It's the other way round. Gamers moving to Wii because of the many great titles the Wii has to over in 2010, and not more of the same shooters the PS3/Xbxo360 offer to the gamers every new month.

But piracy is a big problem. Yes.

Yeah you might as well wait on Red Steel 2 and NMH2 until they hit $30 or less. Or rent the game if you are certain you can beat it within the rental period. If you have a rental subscription, definitely rent this one. I just finished renting NMH2. I beat it on mild in 5 days. Gonna send it back because I don't like the game enough to want to play it again on Bitter. NMH2 was too tedious in many parts. The Shinobu stages give me nightmares (Suda51 should be banned from making platforming games). And the boss battle gimmicks in NMH2 pissed me off. And the game just didn't have the charm of the original. Considering the "to be continued" at the end of NMH1, the sequel probably was planned from the start. But I don't know, it felt like NMH2 was a cash-in. Gamers complained that NMH1 was too basic and repetitive. So Suda51 added a whole bunch of different gameplay elements (Shinobu platforming stages *shudders*) and gimmicks to mix things up. And honestly I felt those different gameplay elements and gimmicks took away from the game.

I'm going to rent Red Steel 2 as well. I bought Wii Motion+ seperately for $20 instead of getting the Red Steel 2 Wii Motion+ Bundle.

I can understand why Wii gamers want to wait for these third-party games to hit the bargain bin. Wii gamers are much more patient than Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers so they don't mind waiting some months for the prices to drop. Whereas the high-profile Nintendo first-party games tend to remain at full price for years. This hype thing is all an illusion really. I remember really wanting to play FF13 when it first came out because of all the hype that came with its release. But then a couple weeks later, the hype died and all of a sudden my interest in trying out the game died down. Hype is so artificial like that.
