Forums - Nintendo - Piracy is the real reason why core games on Wii don't sell as well?

the 360 is very easy to crack, and theres(sadly) no downside to pirating unless you are heavily mp oriented. That SAID you can go online and play xbox live on the games you want and pirate ..say Dantes Inferno or NG2,etc. If the situation is better there, is just barely so. Piracy affects wii as much as pc (and possibly 360) in terms of percentages. A huge amount of pirated copies of NSMB wii or Mkart ,but they still turned profits. In Core games is a downside, but no bigger than elsewhere. You can turn profits alright, i think DSC did just fine with all the piracy. Capcom is often pleased with the results and thats what matters.

Piracy, like used sales, is another excuse for poor content on the game-makers side.

This.  We can't blame piracy when they haven't released a high number of good games to begin with.

Also, if Piracy is hurting the sales of 'ocre' games, than how come core games on other systems are breaking records this gen?  Such as the DS and PSP, which are the most pirated systems by far.  And even with the Wii itself, why would the pirating be so selective?  Why would pirates only be targeting such games as Monster Hunter Tri, MadWorld or Muramasa when games like New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart and Sonic & Mario are breaking records?

Piracy isn't good, but the piracy on the Wii is hardly a dent compared to other mediums.

But that doesn't mean it's because those are Wii games. Those games are just worth about that price to consumers period. It would be the same on the HD systems.

Is it? You've got one system with very strong copy protection and the other has a big downside to piracy in the form of losing access to Xbox Live and some console features. With comparable games, features like online are far weaker as well as overall user experience due to loading times etc. These features are more likely to reduce value for a Wii game for a significant proportion of the core gamer market on the Wii, which by itself doesn't make up a majority of sales but it does have relevance when talking about the relative sales of applicable core titles.

That just means less piracy, not more sales. Just because one can't pirate something doesn't mean one will buy it. One has to want to buy it to make one buy it.

As for online, that's debatable, since many of those online games have been shown to sell better with local multiplayer, and worse without. So that does not reduce value.

Loading times? Are you kidding me? The Wii's loading is no worse than the other systems. So claiming that reduces value only counts for those that believe that false fact.

One has to have an interest in something to bother pirating it. The same interest is required to buy something as well. The most pirated games according to torrents are also the highest selling games.

For online im talking about a smaller sub group which has a greater interest in online play to compliment the local play experience. Having online play doesn't hurt, having no online gameplay does hurt for a reasonable number of people as online gaming becomes more mainstream. This subgroup is also the group which is part of the likely pirate demographic.

Tease.

and the cores are the ones who know how to pirate

it's pretty obious that the wii has a smaller core market, but both the piracy and the titles make the wii core smaller

really, what's the biggest wii core third party?
monster hunter tri?
84 metascore

but then that game is hard to pirate, but many games that flop are fruit of piracy

Theres certainly some evidence to support this theory. Look at the relativly good sales of Monster Hunter tri so far. More than half of the games content is excluisve to online modes. It could be argued that MH3 is the first AAA Wii game in a while (first 3rd party one anyway), and that the quality is the cause of the strong sales.

Monster Hunter 3 imo is the first third party game that I've been interested in on the Wii ever since 2007. It shows that Capcom put effort into this one and it's about time. Other moronic developers should follow suit :p

I jus t blame the games period. There are many games that are worth being pirated but not worth being purchased for 50 bucks espeically with 3rd party putting crap on Wii.

I would buy resdent evil 5, or final fantasy 13 at full price, but not some rail shooter, or a FPS with no multiplayer

No, piracy is not a legitimate excuse.

First off, when someone says that core games don't sell on the Wii, then that usually refers to third party software. Nintendo's games sell, so it really is a question of quality. First party software sets the standard for what gamers expect from a full price product. The list of third party core games that are comparable to Nintendo's offerings in terms of the overall package (quality, content, longevity etc.) is incredibly short, so it shouldn't be surprising that many people hold off of a purchase until these third party titles reach a more appropriate price point.

It's really not that different when compared to the HD consoles where gamers also pass on short games until they drop in price.

This.

I remember here, on vgchartz, a list of the top wii pirated games and guess what...Nintendo games were on that list.

Come on, Squilliam, who are you trying to fool?

I live in costa Rica and I have about ten friends with wiis and they´re all hacked cause here games are very expensive. they all like hardcore wii games its just that here in CR noone buys original games (actually they sell them hacked in pretty much every store, that may be why noone buys ps3s, but EVERYONE had ps2s and wii, cause they can hack them) but games like cod mw are very popular here. so here you can actually see how piracy may hurt sales. people actually call you stupid if you buy original ones.

I would believe it.
